My understanding is HAF is only a READ a protocol. When I last asked about WRITE I was told it would not be part of it.

That's true. The data aspect is merely streaming the Hive blockchain and storing the data in a database. Then HAF handles forks, etc. But, you can create your own custom tables where you can manage the data in those. Basically, HAF does what the community already is doing like Hive Engine, except handling forks and other complicating factors.
