Phishing via traditional mail

Cybercriminals always try to find new ways to scam people.
Dutch police have issued a warning about a new form of phishing where the cybercriminals send printed letters telling the receiver that their debit card is about to expire.
The victims are asked to scan a QR code which is included in the letter to request a new one.
The QR code leads to the scammers website where they request information from the victim among which their pincode.
And it gets even worse. They tell the victims that the expired card is being picked up.
The police have arrested a 17 year old boy in connection with this scam. The boy had an official postman uniform.
The police and bank advise never to return expired debit cards, but to cut them in half and throw them in the bin.

These types of scams seem quite obvious, but it must be quite hard for people that didn't grow up with all this technology. And the shift to digitalisation is irreversible. Banks are closing their offices and more people are forced to manage their financial business online.
I think it’s very important to look after these people and inform them about these scams in order to prevent them from becoming victims.

My mother of 78 has an easy technique for such scams...well, at least, the ones by phone and traditional mail because she has no computer.
She just say no to all and send them to me 😂

Haha, great!
My colleague has a mother of about 90 years old living by herself.
He has her debit card and brings her 'supermarket money' every week to prevent her from being scammed.

Yeah, it's not always easy. And those f*** banks do everything to make it as difficult as possible for elder people.
A couple of years ago I teached her how to use those bank-terminals to make her payments...and once she started to understand and use it, the bank decided to close down those terminals 🤬
Oh yes, you can still ask the bank to accept your paper-payment. Of course m'dam, we can do that for you. It's our pleasure...it's about 5€ extra per payment...
So now she just collect her bills and once a week I do the payments for her...from my mobile phone 😡

She's lucky you can and will do that for her. Not everyone is that lucky.
On the other hand I do understand. The number of people that don't use internet banking reduces every year, but still you have to be there for all your customers I think.
