Economic consequences of post pandemic measures

This week the company where I work published the new home working policy. Before the start of the pandemic remote working wasn’t encouraged at all by the management. But Covid-19 forced us to work from home and it worked out quite well. The new policy allows us to work remotely at least three days a week. This is a huge turnaround for our organisation and from what I hear and read in the news we are not the only one.
A lot of companies are closing some of their offices just because they won’t be needing the office space when more than 50% of their staff is working from home.

Office buildings

Since more and more people are going to work remotely less office space is needed. Rental contracts will no longer be renewed and we will have a lot of abandoned office buildings. This will also have it’s effects on the construction industry since there will be less demand for new office buildings.
But also other companies will be hit by the closing of office buildings. What to think about canteens and their personnel and companies that perform maintenance on installations, security personnel, cleaners and so on….

Travel

Since Covid-19 a lot of physical meetings are replaced with online meetings. Although this saves people a lot of time this also has an impact on the transport industries. Here in the Netherlands we had overloaded trains with commuters, but they are almost empty now. In larger countries there will probably be less demand for internal and international flights. Cars will be used less for commuting which will impact lease companies and garages.

My thoughts

The consequences of the measures taken during the Covid-19 crisis will have an effect on how we will work after this pandemic. The longer I think about it, the more industries will feel this. I think more companies will not survive this pandemic than we initially think.
And yes, it also brings new possibilities, but I do think a lot of people are going to lose their jobs over this. Even when the pandemic is over.
What do you think? And can we do anything about it?

You underlined quite a few critical aspects of this useless so called pandemic and many of the ones not realizing at the moment in what deep shit we're currently in will end out crying when it will be too late.

What do you think? And can we do anything about it?

Yes. Stop wearing the masks which are useless, stop being manipulated with fake news and numbers and protest to get our normality back.

There is a new normal which means we are not going back to what was.

Many industries such as you mention are in for a rough few years regardless of how things unfold. The best of circumstances are actually pretty bad for them.

I dont think we are in for a good 2021.
