It's the same concept as in regular programming using languages such as C, C++, Perl, etc. Instead of having countless branches throughout the code, modules are devoted to specific tasks.

Modularity also makes maintenance easier in the long run (especially for people who inherit the code after the original programmer is long gone).

I'm guessing that Bitcoin (as the first cryptocurrency) and altcoins pre-Ethereum aren't modular blockchains.

Bingo! You got it right in your head Magna. Most L1s did not focus on making frameworks for modularity.

Polkadot and Cosmos are the best examples of modular blockchains that have the main L1.

It's nice but I think it's kind of complex. Are we assuming that some application is changing certain extensions or is it the entire blockchain changing? It just seems like a pain to maintain because every single module has to work with every single other module.

Yes it gets complex as more branches join in.

Some DApps would need their own blockchains depending upon the nature of their work/business.

For example, Polygon is making 7-8 different types of products for different use cases.
