The Landscape Always Changes

Back in 1996 I was earning a decent side hustle on Ebay right up until 2006 when the opportunities to earn diminished. What had attracted many to the site was the idea of finding a bargain and there were plenty if you had the experience to play the auction game.

Subtle changes like when they added an extension on the countdown if a new bid was received. This new addition had screwed me and many others as we used to game the countdown with hidden bids and would only be revealed if actioned when the price rose. The extra 60 seconds allowed other parties to remain in the bidding process when normally it would have already ended. The fun element was taken away purely for greed.

The site at the time was so profitable that just 1 purchase of $10 netted myself just under $1K and there were hundreds of deals if you looked. Ebay first started out as a hobby as I used it buy comics to add to my collection which sits at well over 7000 with many dating back to 1954. The internet opened up the ability to find collectables world wide at a fraction of the prices they were worth. As you learned more and more it opened up all the other avenues of being able to earn. Retail started appearing and Ebay became more of a shop than an auction and why I abandoned the side hustle in 2011. My last purchase was mobile/cell phones and by then PayPal had restrictions in place depending on what country you were from even though you had been on the site for over 15 years.

Unfortunately changes always happen and what once was easy became virtually impossible. Ebay was a business and trying to increase the final sale prices plus also adding a reserve killed it for many early starters. I was involved with some business auctions 2 years ago and they also had a similar system triggering extended time with new bids and this put me off as it is clearly not a proper auction set with time and removes any skills or advantages you may have.

I think possibly this is why I have always had a sense of urgency in most things I do as there is always a timeline even if we cannot see it. Crypto is a prime example as with less people around there is less competition fighting over what is available.

Hive is a perfect example as increased numbers will only put more pressure on the reward pool which stays the same size making Hive harder to earn. Just think if we have 20 K active accounts now in a few years that could easily be 1 million or 50 x bigger making it 50 x harder to earn your slice of the pie.

It is when the landscape changes you only realise how good things were before the change happened. People bitch and complain now saying how hard Hive is too earn so just wait until the masses arrive as then it will be a tough task to grow. This is why having stake is so important as it will allow you to grow no matter how many new users join.

They say money makes money and the same theory applies to stake. The larger the stake even if the APR drops off a cliff you still earn more than most and why growing the stake must be a priority for all those involved in crypto. As the market matures the volatility will disappear so those trading will have smaller gains. The biggest winners will be those holding a large stake as their earnings will be guaranteed.

The one thing that is guaranteed in technology is new ways of thinking and doing things happen and that nothing ever remains constant. Relying on earning via certain method is highly dangerous as the chances are within a short period of time if you don't change you will be left behind.

You have a comic collection dating back to the fifties?! Wow. Would be interesting to shuffle through.
Loved that insight into the early days of eBay. 👍🏻
Enjoy your Sunday

I tend to read some every now and then but some are fairly fragile as back then they used staples and some had glue which insects somehow love to eat as it must be sweet.

So, your oldest comics are the same age as me. I wonder what they will be worth nowadays.
We have those irritating 10pm power cuts again.

I specialize in the pocket book war comics (Commando, Battle and War Picture Library) and depending on age and condition anywhere between $10 and $50 each. Numbers 1-100 (Commando) sold for 200K around 20 years ago so who knows in another 10 years what the numbers will be. I see every year that ticks by there will be less around as even the later ones fetch a decent amount these days. I got lucky as I managed to pick up a few thousand in one purchase around 25 years ago. We just came off a power cut 6-8 and it is not fun.

Wow! In this case maybe you should hang on to them for longer than 10 years, as the value will continue to escalate. I have a few 1954 DIY manuals laying around and one 1954 CD. But that's it apart from my old camera collection.
Yes, you were wise to buy that number 25 years ago and to hang on to them.
The current news is that the power cuts will be increased to Level 8 or worse during our winter months.

Unfortunately not everything that is old has value. I would estimate my collection as it currently sits at around $100K or maybe slightly more. The market has bottomed out for now and will go up again.
Yes stage 8 or 10 is guaranteed and heard today they want to install special meters in all houses so they can control individual usage of appliances. This they said would take 4 years to implement so I guess they don't plan to fix this anytime soon. I though 5 years minimum and could be much longer.

Yep, mine are worthless, but I keep it as I like it. I am sure that that the market will go up again at some time or another.
All of us will be losers re the power cuts, one way or another. I am just sad that so many businesses are forced to shut down.

Cheers and I am out of here!

The early days of the market were probably the most profitable times and I think that is the best time to build. Things will always change and I think it's the perfect time to build here on Hive. In my early days, I had RC issues so I understand that RCs and HP will be way more important in this ecosystem as Hive grows.

Yes I also had RC issues early on and they will become very important as the number of users grow. HP is the key to opening the real wealth when things start to boom.
