Airbus Leading Boeing In Stats

The Airbus A320 Neo vs The Boeing B737 MAX is where the market share is won and lost as the narrow body aircraft are what airlines are now buying.

The rivalry between these two companies is massive as they are vying for market share in what has been an uncertain market place over the last 3 years. Airbus has been the clear leader over the last 3 years and looks to be making this the 4th year running.

I think seeing what is being ordered gives a fair indication of where the travel industry really is. I know here in South Africa there is less activity in the sky as there are so few planes flying internally compared to what we had been accustomed to prior covid.

For 2022, Forecast International’s analysts currently expect Boeing and Airbus to deliver 450 and 702 commercial jets, respectively. Compared to the 2021 level, this is a 32.4 percent increase for Boeing and a 14.9 percent increase for Airbus.

Airbus have definitely hit Boeing hard as they have upped their game scooping the lucrative narrow body market (single aisle). This is the mass market for short flights and has become the airline industry bread and butter. Boeing had pinned their hopes on the ill fated 737 MAX which backfired as crashes don't sell planes.

What is interesting to see is the back orders as this guarantees the manufacturing business for x amount of years. At the end of last month Airbus had a backlog of 7046 aircraft of which over 90% were narrow body aircraft. That equates to 11.5 years of production which is kind of nuts to even contemplate. Boeing has just over 5000 on back order (80% narrow body) which equates to 6.5 years in production time. Both Airbus and Boeing are down from their previous ATH's with back orders which is expected as they have had a quietish 3 years in comparison to prior covid numbers. The numbers are down by about 750-800 each which is more than 10% so is quite considerable.

These companies will be in some ways be political with the orders they receive as Governments use these two manufacturers to send messages. This is in many ways is Europe vs The USA even though they are allies. China placed a massive order with Airbus which also sends a subtle message to the States and DELTA supported their own home based Boeing with a $10 Billion order this week. The Farnborough Air Show was last week which is where the manufacturers collect anticipated orders and is an annual buying/selling event.

30 years ago Boeing had a 60% market share over rivals Airbus and McDonnell Douglas. Today the tables have been turned as Airbus have the dominant market share of 60% even with the no McDonnell Douglas leaving Boeing with the 40%.

The only way Boeing can turn this around is to develop even more economical aircraft and why Airbus have been so dominant as their R&D has proven superior.

Regardless of the rivalry, I believe boeing jas made a name that can't be erased so suddenly. I also think that boeing need to shuffle the management team, bring in new hands with fresh minds in order to stay on top of the game.

Seen a couple of both companies new models come hurtling past my window this week as I live very close to Farnborough Airport, home of the 2nd largest trade show in the world which started on Monday.

Apparently that is where most of the business is finalised and where Boeing announced their $10 Billion dollar deal with DELTA Airlines. Obviously they knew about it beforehand and had to announce something after the big Chinese order Airbus announced a few weeks back.

Oh it’s massive and as you can imagine a large part of the local economy is supported by the industry. Farnborough calls itself “The Home of British Aviation”

My sister who is an officer in the Royal Navy used to have a role purchasing various aircraft for them. She loved coming to Farnborough because you’d get wined and dined by all the big players looking to secure multi-million if not billion pound orders!

Shame that they don’t do the public airshow now which would have been this weekend but you still get to see some amazing aircraft come in and the kids obviously love seeing things like the RAF Typhoon jets and Red Arrows (below) come over the house

Sounds like your sister had fun. Same thing happens when you go on a buying trip to China as if you aren't drinking then the Chinese think you aren't having a good time. Nice part of the country to live in and I also preferred it down South.
