2024 A Very Big Year For The Electric Vehicle Market

source

I have been following StoreDot for quite some time now as they have been at the forefront of battery technology for the EV market. There have been no big announcements since 2019 when they announced their breakthrough with the 5 minute charge time for a scooter. They had already completed the technology allowing a phone to be fully charged within 30 seconds.

The 30 second phone charge was completed in 2015 so over 6 years it has taken them to get this far with over 1000 scientists working on this project. The range and the ability to increase it and not the time is what has been holding them back.

The last time I checked in to see what was going on the company was more concerned about creating a bigger range for the battery. As we all know the biggest draw back for the EV is the time to charge along with the range. It is fine if you are only using the vehicle to go to work and back but rather pointless for longer trips.

StoreDot has been making the Tesla sized battery which is known as the 4680 cylindrical cell which refers to it's size being a 46mm x 80 mm cylindrical shaped cell. In August this year they filed a patent for this particular cell in regards to the fast charging aspect that they have now finalised.

The next stage is to run tests on vehicles that are on the road so it is not surprising that they plan to open an R&D department in California, USA next year. The plan is to start manufacturing in the areas where the cars are being built so a manufacturing plant will also be established before 2024 in the States.

Currently StoreDot has managed to get the fast charge for the 4680 cell down to 5 min per 100 miles which is getting to the point that would make the EV market explode. Companies like LG and Samsung are working on similar projects with the 4680 cell, but have not had the break through that StoreDot has.

Another company to keep an eye on is Apple of all people who have been working on an EV with Hyundai as their car manufacturer. The Apple car would be an Apple brand and not Hyundai in this case. The EV has a range of 300 miles and currently can be charged at a rate of 60 miles per 5 minutes so 25 minutes for a fully charged battery. Much quicker than what we have seen up till now as the technology is advancing at a serious pace. Apple have penciled in 2025 as the year for their vehicle launch so still some time before that happens and 3 years is a long time in the technology world. Hyundai could be the stumbling block as they don't just want to be a contractor for the vehicle and who knows if this deal will fall through.

Whatever happens the EV is going to gain more traction because of these developments which can only be a good thing for everyone. Tesla seems to have a battery supplier in StoreDot bringing new technology to them which should boost their sales even more.

VW and BMW are also investing a lot of money into electric cars development.

now the next phase will be how will they get electricity to power them.

That is true as here in Africa we will be using petrol and diesel until 2050 lol. There is not enough electricity for houses let alone vehicles.

Here in Serbia we are still hard in coal electricity. for few years back we got some more renewable sources. (next to my town there is a windmill park build with plans to make more).

that Vancouver news about using miners to heat some parts of town (or something like that) could be interesting. Building a lot more solar/wind for everyday needs and using the excess energy for mining (and also heating if you live in the parts where it is needed)

Very true but have also seen the Soviet Nuclear power plant ships which could become popular as well. Renewable energy is going to be it at some point as coal use is being banned by 2050.

I don't consider petrol and diesel cars are making more harm to the planet than the construction process of an EV. I own a diesel and quite fine with that. I am not an advocate of EVs but neither a hater. I believe there's room for each of them.

You may be right but at some point we will have no choice but to switch. Many countries have set dates for banning of selling petrol and diesel vehicles. Over time I think with mass production the greener the production will become. like you I am happy with fuel but not against electric. In Africa electric is so far off as they can't produce enough for normal consumption let alone vehicles.

The adaption of EVs is happening faster than I expected, mostly because Tesla has managed to make a sweet looking car and has made it "cool" to have one. Now the rest of the manufacturers are getting on board. Infrastructure improvements are still needed but we are getting there.
