Protect Yourself With These 3 Privacy Based Apps!

How many more reports of hacks, spying, and data mining do we need to hear before people get the message?

When was the best time to protect your data from prying eyes? That would have been at least a few years ago. When's the next best time to protect your data from prying eyes, that would be right now!

Why Protect Your Data?

Fundamentally speaking your data should belongs to you, until it doesn't. As a human being on planet earth in the year 2021 you produce an incredible amount of data!

You're a walking, talking, texting, messaging, data factory!

You can empower yourself to be in control of your data and decide how, when, and why it's shared and used by third parties. This is the fundamental shift that needs to happen, that I think is already in progress.

What I think is needed is a complete shift in the mindset to understand and come to terms with the fact that you produce an incredible amount of data, this data valuable, and you should own it.

What happens with your data should be up to you to decide!

3 Privacy Based Apps To Protect Your Data

DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser

10M+ downloads so far with a 4.8 star rating. DuckDuckGo is a modern privacy browser designed to allow you to search the internet anonymously, escape trackers, and browse with privacy. I have this app installed on my phone and I use it in tandem with Brave browser.

Key features include:

  • One click tabs and browsing data clearing.
  • Automatically block hidden third party trackers.
  • Private search engine to avoid being tracked.
  • Forced encryption to https.
  • Website privacy rating (A-F).
  • Automatically invoke legal privacy right under CCPA, GDPR etc.

Signal Private Messanger

Key features include:

  • End to end encryption powered by the open source signal protocol.
  • Optimized to deliver messages quickly even on congested networks.
  • Completely independent 501cs nonprofit. No ads, No tracking.
  • High quality voice chat.
  • Built in image editing.

Brave Private Browser

10M+ downloads so far with a 4.7 star rating. Brave is a free privacy based web browser with it's own rewards token in BAT. The app is designed to provide free, safe browsing with private search and pop-up blocker.

Key features include:

  • Fast & secure web browsing.
  • Private browsing with adblocker.
  • Anonymous browsing history.
  • Private search through DuckDuckGo search engine.
  • Private tabs for incognito browsing.
  • Forced https through "https everywhere".
  • 3rd party cookie blocker.
  • Earn crypto while you browse!

My Shift To Privacy

Personally I have made it my goal this year to transition to almost entirely privacy based browsing, search, and messaging which I have been able to do with these three apps.

Breaking old habits is hard!

Signal was a pretty easy switch for me. The group chats are great, and once I discovered the voice chat was very clear and issue free I was done with regular text, WhatsApp, and Facebook messenger.

DuckDuckGo is easy to use and makes a great alternative when you want total privacy.

Getting rid of chrome was the toughest move for me. What has helped is that my HIVE keychain extension has worked really well with Brave, allowing me to do all my regular HIVE blockchain transactions without interruption. My only hang up is that there's a bit of extra work I need to do in order to use MetaMask, I'll get that sorted out soon enough I'm sure.

I hope you found this post helpful! Let me know which privacy based apps you're using?

Ciao for now,

@agr8buzz

I use all 3 of these, plus I downloaded protonmail and proton vpn for free. You can opt in to a minimal monthly fee for more features on both the male and the vpn.

Cool, I'm hearing more about proton mail all the time but I did not know they have a VPN, I'll have to check that out.

Really a VPN would be a great next step! Thanks for planting the seed

I also love the proton family, as well as tutanota, if you don't know it... to put a but to the 2 best email services is that they have disabled the option of IMAP and SMTP making it impossible in its free version the use of email managers Thunderbird style. But of course they have to live off of something, apart from the fact that it adds security to the protocols and ultimately to your email. For the rest it is a fantastic option, I'm going to catch up a little and in not long I would like to do an article on the subject.

Hey there, nice to meet you. I'll follow you and maybe tag me when you write it. I'm but a novice on most tech stuff.

Signal is great, and I'm sure they will continue to grow to be even better. I've been on a mission to switch everyone I know over. But using the app is really simple and easy, I just got tired of facebook (instagram) reading my texts and sending me ads, gets creepy.

if there is one thing I can add to your great article it is the use of Linux, and I also usually recommend https://prism-break.org/.

Absolutely Linux! Many aspects of the encrypted and censorship resistance future will require an open source operating system, and my bet is it will be Linux! I have a Linux based OS on my raspberry Pi.

Will take a look at prism break, thanks for the tip.

The big bombshell in terms of privacy will be when Hive or Leo finance launches its own search engine or messaging app.

I recently switched to using Presearch for 90% of my searches from google. It also is privacy focused protecting users data. Combined with Brave I feel a little bit better about not having everything out there. I have a friend who I started using matrix.io with a few friends to start to move away from discord/facebook for day to day conversations.

I think privacy will be one of the biggest movements along with crypto in the next 10 years. When people look back, they will be shocked at how open we used to be, and how much we shared without getting paid.

Absolutely! and glad you mention Matrix, an encrypted alternative for Discord will only gain more and more traction over time. 10 years, yeah that sounds about right, these things take time.

If I was in charge 🥴 or had kids even, I would teach this through school at an early age, here's how to run Linux on a Pi, and here's how to run decentralized communication nodes so that your data and communications are encrypted end to end.

Here's to an encrypted future! 🍻
