Breaking News: On Monday a US District court dismissed the FTC's lawsuit that aimed to break up the tech company. The lawsuit claimed that Facebook was in violation of antitrust laws due to it's acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp.

In his decision to dismiss the complaint Monday, Judge James E. Boasberg wrote that the FTC offered insufficient evidence for its central claim — that Facebook wields monopoly power. theverge.com

Big tech lives to fight another day, and be a centralized controlling and censoring force in the flow of information and communications between billions of people. Not a monopoly at all!

Facebook Not A Social Media Monopoly!

Apparently owning 4 of the top 5 social media applications by user base doesn't qualify as a monopoly.

When I crunch the numbers below that adds up to 7.3 Billion people communicating through the servers of the 5th largest company on planet earth.

Now I can't say I know what evidence was presented by the FTC in their bid to break up one of the most powerful and influential entities on the planet but I do know that if you go after these guys you better bring it! No half measures you need to come prepared with all your ducks in a row, you're going to war, the outcome my change the course of history, and if you're not careful it could be for the worse.

How did they fuck this up?

Big Tech In Full Control Now

If you crunch the number of users below for each of the apps that Facebook owns the total user base adds up to 7,384,000,000 people. I realize that many of these users are probably being double counted as they use more than 1 of the apps.

Lets go out on a limb and say half these people use 2 apps, that gives us an estimate of 3.6 Billion people whose data, information, and communication is passing through servers owned by Facebook.

Consider for a minute that the population of planet earth is 7.7 Billion.

Game set and match if you ask me. Where does this lead us I don't know. What I do know that with the current state of partisan media domination, it's a sure bet that the majority of people on this planet that communicate online are being manipulated by one of the largest corporation in existence.

They've just been given the green light to continue.

Does this mean things (current level of thought manipulation and censorship) are going to get worse before they get better? I have a feeling that's the road that we as a species are travelling down, unfortunately, and disappointingly.

That said there's never been a better time to unplug the cable, swap out WhatsApp for signal, try web browsers like Brave and Duck Duck Go vs Chrome, and hang out on the HIVE blockchain vs the echo chamber that is Facebook.

You're here right now, that gives me some faith in humanity. We will grow stronger in numbers and the machine attempts its full court press. Our actions and behaviours today will potentially decide the fate and ability to freely communicate for many generations to follow. We've got this!

Ciao for now,

@agr8buzz

I don't follow mainstream social media much and had no clue Facebook owned 4 of the top 5.

I did know they owned Instagram.

Any plans for the #BATTLE token?

Thanks for the beer!

For battle I'm waiting on funding that I thought was going to come in Q1 but didn't, but at the same time all good devs are busy now because of bull run. I'm part of a team building something on polygon, once that's launched I might pitch battle to the group and see if there's interest to build a custom front end.

It's not a monopoly

  1. There are competitors
  2. Government does not forbid competition

That said, the allegations of NSA/CIA/FBI/etc. funding for political surveillance does warrant investigation, and all such government funds should be cut. We also need to demand more transparency regarding our personal information use if we stay, and encourage more people to switch to alternatives like Diaspora or HIVE.

Who are the competitors?

Have to agree with you on that one!

Who are the competitors?

Diaspora, Minds, MeWe, NextDoor, Hive, Discord, and who knows what all else is out there. None are identical, but all serve various aspects of the Facebook experience better. Hell, MySpace is still around and could always be revived.

You not hearing of them only means you aren't looking for alternatives.

Facebook can't buy what isn't for sale in the first place.
