Did Blockchain Cuties Go To Far With DeFi Play?

They're certainly going for it, but when is a game no longer a game?

Maybe it's just my nature to question almost everything but with good intentions!❤️

Yesterday I read this CoinTelegraph article talking about one of the OG blockchain games Blockchain Cuties making a move into DeFi, with overhauled tokenomics and the addition of a governance coin.

At a high level I'm super fascinated by this, and I'm all for blockchain gaming exploring decentralization and fresh takes on asset ownership.

I believe games should be about fun, being challenged and having to use some skills. Sprinkle in true asset ownership and a governance token and now we're talking.

I don't think the primary source of value should come from a financial system that requires investing. That's not to say that there isn't room for both because I think there is when done right, with balance.

But at what point is it no longer a game, but instead a gamified investment scheme?

Let's have a look at Blockchain Cuties new tokenomics system and economy.

Blockchain Cuties Universe and DeFi

Blockchain Cuties Universe will become the first DeFi game that leverages the power of five blockchains. The game’s team believes that the synergy of NFT and DeFi technologies will propel the game’s economy and engagement to new heights. To achieve the ambitious goal of creating a sustainable, flourishing tokenomics system, Blockchain Cuties Universe will introduce Blockchain Cuties Universe Governance Token (BCUG).

We have a new governance token in BCUG, and it's being touted as a non-fungible functional utility token to be used as a means of payments, or settlement between players and other economic participants.

Other economic participants

Essentially there's now two ways to participate in the game. You can collect consumables, wearables, cuties, play in tournaments and all that. Then on the other side you can participate in gameplay farming, liquidity farming, and game governance.

Blockchain Cuties certainly isnt the first game to incorporate DeFi, but I think their claim is that their the first to do it across 5 blockchains.

Splinterlands in 2020 with their Land sale I think is a good example of incorporating DeFi. Participants could in theory not play the actual game but instead invest in the economy and earn yield.

As stated in the press release BCUG is intended to support the following mechanics:

  • DAO governance
  • DeFi yield rewards
  • NFT upgradability
  • Token-powered, community-driven development.

I don't know about you but when looking at this info graphic it sure looks like a lot to unpack for a game..

Also Interested in the Game Mechanics

Cool so DAO and yield farming is now a thing, but what about game play mechanics?

As for NFT Upgradability is looks as though this is coming in the form of in-game perks.

BCUG holders will have several additional benefits in the game, such as giving players a chance to increase the power of their in-game characters and tradable items.

That's definitely an advantage both in term of game play and increasing the value of your in-game assets.

When BCUG?

Distribution will kick off in Q1 2021, hey that's now! It looks like there will be an "event" which consists of first a private sale (seed/strategic) which get's their partners in first.

This will be followed by a public sale allowing everyone else to snap up some tokens, which should helps provide some immediate value to seed stage participants.

Is This The Future of Blockchain Gaming?

Simply put yes, I believe it is. At a high level is provides additional ways for people to engage with the game, which is great. A heathy economy should have a variety of participants that each find value in participating in different ways.

This is a significant undertaking and the hopes are to position this game for future success and I believe it will do just that.

At the same time I hope it isn't to much of a distraction and the actual fun of playing a game doesn't take a backseat to the game becoming an investment vehicle.
