Fungi infested by flies - Hongos infestados por moscas.

In this post I am going to show photographs of fungi on the stem of a tree that I found in a very wooded area in a mountain located in Montalbán (Carabobo, Venezuela).

En esta entrada voy a mostrar fotografías de hongos sobre el tallo de un árbol que encontré en un área muy boscosa en una montaña localizada en Montalbán (Carabobo, Venezuela).

It seems to me that the fungus species belongs to the genus Pleurotus. The species of this genus belong to a group known as "white-rot fungi". These white-rot fungi are extensively studied because of their exceptional lignocellulolytic properties.

Me parece que la especie de hongo pertenece al género Pleurotus. Las especies de este género pertenecen a un grupo conocido como "hongos de podredumbre blanca". Estos hongos de la podredumbre blanca son muy estudiados debido a sus excepcionales propiedades lignocelulolíticas.

Species of this genus are edible and also have several biological effects, as they contain important bioactive molecules. They are a rich source of nutrients, particularly protein and minerals, as well as vitamins B, C and D.

Especies de este género son comestibles y también tienen varios efectos biológicos, ya que contienen importantes moléculas bioactivas. Son una fuente rica de nutrientes, particularmente de proteínas y minerales, así como de vitaminas B, C y D.

Something remarkable in the photographs is that the fungi are infested by flies. Flies of at least 8 families of dipterous (Calliphoridae, Culicidae, Drosophiladae, Cecidomyiidae, Muscidae, Mycetophilidae, Phoridae and Sciaridae) are the main insects. These flies feed on nutrients from fruiting bodies and are capable of carrying fungal contamination, bacterial diseases and mites.

Algo notable en las fotografías es que los hongos están infestados por moscas. Las moscas de al menos 8 familias de dípteros (Calliphoridae, Culicidae, Drosophiladae, Cecidomyiidae, Muscidae, Mycetophilidae, Phoridae y Sciaridae) son los principales insectos. Esas moscas se alimentan de los nutrientes de los cuerpos fructíferos y son capaces de transportar contaminación fúngica, enfermedades bacterianas y ácaros.

The flies, especially in their immature stage (larvae), perforate the stipe (stem) and pileus of fungi, opening galleries inside them, causing their general depreciation. The adults of most of these families do not have great flight autonomy, have a variable length (from a few millimeters to several centimeters), can have a thin or stout body and are usually attracted by the odor coming from the fermentation exhaled by the decomposing material. Females lay their eggs directly onto the substrate. Born larvae from their eggs feed on mycelium and subsequently migrate to the mushrooms, destroying the stipe and pileus partially or fully, making them unfit for consumption.

Las moscas, especialmente en su estado inmaduro (larvas), perforan el estípite (tallo) y el píleo de los hongos, abriendo galerías en su interior, provocando su depreciación general. Los adultos de la mayoría de estas familias no tienen gran autonomía de vuelo, tienen una longitud variable (de unos milímetros a varios centímetros), pueden tener el cuerpo delgado o robusto y suelen ser atraídos por el olor procedente de la fermentación exhalada por el material en descomposición. Las hembras ponen sus huevos directamente sobre el sustrato. Las larvas nacidas de sus huevos se alimentan del micelio y posteriormente migran a los hongos, destruyendo el estípite y el pileo parcial o totalmente, haciéndolos no aptos para el consumo.

At the same place was a fallen tree and its stem also had fungi of the genus Pleurotus, and the fungi were also infested by flies. It seems to me that all the flies on the fungi, which are seen in all the photographs, belong to the genus Drosophila. Some species of this genus prefer decayed fungi for feeding, and others prefer fresh fungi. In relation to oviposition the same thing happens, some species of flies prefer decayed fungi, and others prefer fresh fungi for oviposition.

En el mismo sitio estaba un árbol caído y su tallo también tenía hongos del género Pleurotus, y los hongos también estaban infestados por moscas. Me parece que todas las moscas sobre los hongos, que se ven en todas las fotografías, pertenecen al género Drosophila. Algunas especies de este género prefieren los hongos descompuestos para alimentarse, y otras los hongos frescos. En relación con la oviposición ocurre lo mismo, algunas especies de moscas prefieren los hongos descompuestos, y otras los hongos frescos para ovipositar.

The oviposition habit of flies of the genus Drosophila varies in the proportion of eggs oviposited in different parts of fungi. Some oviposit only on the lamellae, some on the lamellae and the upper surface of the pileus, some mainly on the pileus, and some equally on the pileus and the stipe of the fungi; there is no stable trend.

El hábito de oviposición de moscas del género Drosophila varía en la proporción de huevos ovipositados en diferentes partes de los hongos. Algunas ovipositan solo en las láminas, otras en las láminas y en la superficie superior del píleo, otras principalmente en el píleo y otras a partes iguales en el píleo y en el estípite de los hongos; no existe una tendencia estable.

Infestation of these fungi is not only caused by flies but also by other arthropods such as springtails and some spiders. Spiders visit these fungi to extract nutrients by boring into the stipe of the fungus and causing damage to the mycelium, preferring rotten mushrooms. They also visit to consume microscopic insects.

La infestación de estos hongos no es causada solo por moscas sino también por otros artrópodos como los colémbolos y algunas arañas. Las arañas visitan estos hongos para extraer nutrientes, perforando el estípite del hongo y causando daños en el micelio, prefiriendo los hongos podridos. También los visitan para consumir insectos microscópicos.
