What is the difference between Horsepower (HP) and Torque?

P = T * 2π * n/60

PS = M * n / 5252

Horsepower vs. Torque

The YouTube AI suggested another interesting video to me that explains the difference between horsepower and torque extremely clearly using Lego motors.

Torque is the rotational force measured in Newton meters that the motor produces at the drive shaft / crank.

Horsepower, on the other hand, is the power that the engine produces per unit time and is essentially a function of torque and speed (angular velocity). Engine power used to be measured in horsepower (HP) and nowadays it is measured in kilowatts (kW).

P = T * 2π * n/60

where P is the engine power in Watt, T is the torque in Nm, and n is the engine speed per minute (rpm).

The formula for the historical measurement in horsepower is as follows:

HP = M * n / 5252

M is torque in foot-pound here (imperial unit).

1 horsepower was defined as the power required by 1 horse to lift a mass of 75 kilograms via a cable pull system by 1 meter at a time within one second, (which was probably the power of 1 average horse).

Which is kind of funny.

Best to watch the video to never confuse horsepower and torque again.
