Tor Browser: How to remove letterboxing, the black/gray bars in Tor Browser 🧅
- about:config öffnen (in der Adresszeile zu "about:config" navigieren)
- Warnung bestätigen (Accept Risk and Continue)
How to remove letterboxing, the black/gray bars in Tor Browser
English
The Tor Browser is the browser of choice if you really want to surf the Internet anonymously.
But there is one feature that rather bothers me and that is the fixed window size or letterboxing, as it is officially called.
In order to make fingerprinting of the browser more difficult, the Tor Browser normally doesn't use the whole window, but rounds the window to a standardized size, so that one can't easily infer the device you're using from the window size (viewport).
A side effect is that the viewport does not use the whole window and black (or white) bars appear, similar to what happens when you watch a movie on a 16:9 monitor.
Howerver, to remove the black bars, there is a flag in the settings that you can change.
How to remove the letterboxing in the Tor browser
- open about:config (navigate to "about:config" in the address bar)
- accept the warning (Accept Risk and Continue)
- look for the setting "letterboxing" and set the setting privacy.resistFingerprinting.letterboxing to false.
Violá! Now the Tor Browser will use the whole window. However, this makes you a bit easier to track. You have to decide for yourself, whether you want to take that risk, depending on your usage and privacy needs.
Do you use the Tor Browser? Do you have letterboxing enabled or disabled?

This is really nice and helpful, thanks for sharing the steps in removing it.
Browsing privately is essential, but don't you find it slows down your internet speed?
Few are browsers that guarantee complete confidentiality when surfing Internet. Thanks for your instructions.
I don't know about this browsers before but I will check it out now

I'm gonna file this under my "no idea when I'll use it, but good to know" folder.

Yeah, it's one of the first settings I change when I install the TOR browser, like to have it full screen without the black bars, even if it becomes less anonymous then.

yea, that could be annoying, nice fix.. 😎
i don't use Tor all the time, but have before.
I don't really use Tor because I don't really know if it's the best place to go to because of all the dangers. At least, I don't really risk it but I know about Tor from a few videos that I have seen about it.
