Bienvenid@

• Herpes.

• Cáncer.

otros microrganismos que detecta el Papanicolaou

• Vaginosis bacteriana.

• Candidiasis.

• Chlamydia.

• Tricomoniasis.

• Leptothrix.

• Actinomices.

Welcome

Hello, how are you today? I hope you are very well, today I am going to talk a little bit about what is cytology and how it helps us, I hope you like it.

What is cytology?

It is the macroscopic and morphological study of the cell that helps to detect different microorganisms that cause vaginal infections, prevents and detects cancer, its main purpose is to diagnose precancerous lesions to act on it when it is still curable.

What is the Pap smear

It is the most frequent study to detect changes or alterations in the cells of the cervix, it is also known as vaginal cytology, for the sample must obtain a sample of cells from the neck which must be taken by a gynecologist. During the test, a metal or plastic speculum is inserted into the vagina.

The speculum is then opened to separate the walls of the vagina so that we can see the cervix, then a spatula or brush (also called a cytobrush) is used to gently take some cells from the cervix. The sample is placed on a glass plate or in a bottle containing a solution to preserve the cells, Finally, the sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis, this test takes only minutes, it is not painful, but it is somewhat annoying.

The test will depend on age, medical history and the results of the last Pap test. Generally, doctors recommend that women between the ages of 25 and 65 repeat the test every three years. If risk factors are present, the physician may recommend more frequent Pap tests regardless of age.

Risk factors:

- Diagnosis of cervical cancer or Pap that showed precancerous cells.

- HIV infection.

- Weakened immune system due to organ transplantation, chemotherapy or chronic use of corticosteroids.

How should I prepare for a Pap test?

You should not have sexual intercourse for 2 or 3 days before the test; likewise the use of tampons, contraceptive foams, vaginal medications, vaginal douching, vaginal creams or powders. Ideally, the sample should be taken at least 5 days after the end of the menstrual period.

After the Pap smear test

You can resume your normal activities immediately after the sample is taken. You may have a small amount of vaginal bleeding.

What diseases can the Pap test detect?

- Human papillomavirus.

- Herpes.

- Cancer.

Other microorganisms that the Papanicolaou can detect

- Bacterial vaginosis.

- Candidiasis.

- Chlamydia.

- Trichomoniasis.

- Leptothrix.

- Actinomyces.
