Virtual Reality (VR) has been making strides as an immersive technology, but widespread adoption seems far off. Companies like Meta and other tech giants have been focusing on the headgear experience, and a new angle is being pursued by CommonGround that doesn’t involve headgear to access the metaverse itself. Smartphones and web applications are skipping the headgear in the VR experience for an accessible and powerful metaverse experience.

CommonGround has raised $25 million to develop technology to create a VR experience without headgear. The metaverse has been traditionally accessed using headsets designed to simulate 3D environments. New steps are being taken to scan users to create VR avatars and simulate reality without the need of cumbersome hardware. New VR technologies will arise that will utilize the ubiquitous smartphone and introduce billions to the metaverse.

The technology being trialed is called “TrueSelf Scan”, which uses an application on a smartphone to scan the likeness of the user onto a digital avatar. The current application for this technology is videoconferencing, but many other applications could be developed. CommonGround is an Israeli startup with funding from a founder of Checkpoint. Freedom from costly hardware that is not practical for billions makes the metaverse relevant and potentially a new part of our daily lives.

Since billions of people own smartphones, this technology has a real chance of taking hold. We are all familiar with scanning QR codes and objects and taking pictures, so this will come as second nature while accessing the potential of the metaverse. Adoption has been slow thus far for metaverse applications, and even the megacap tech giant Meta (formerly Facebook) has suffered heavy losses while working on metaverse upgrades. Wearing VR headgear is cumbersome and gets in the way of the experience after prolonged periods of use. Why not focus on smartphone technologies to access the metaverse that are linked to smartphone applications and other web applications?

Future technologies may scan user’s bodies and environments where avatars navigate the metaverse on a screen or VR headgear. This scanning technology could be the bridge technology that allows for a choice of VR headgear or a screen (PC or smartphone) that leads to a VR revolution. Such a choice could lead to an explosion in new technologies and applications from business to entertainment.

The ability to access VR without cumbersome headgear is revolutionary for the space, and may make metaverse applications more accessible and reliable. Although the current popular HTC models of VR headset retail around $300, a smartphone app that allows interfacing through an avatar is even more so. The more exposure people have to the metaverse, the better. We need to get people of all means acquainted with the power and the relevancy of the metaverse, and this is a great first step.
