That's one amazing motherfucker!

avatar

I was watching some nature videos and shit on YouTube the other day when I stumbled upon this amazing little fucker. It really blew my mind, and probably will your's too. Enjoy:

That camouflage is just so amazing and if it wasn't for the video description providing the species common and scientific name I wouldn't be so sure it's a real insect or cgi 😅🤣

Lichen Katydid (Markia hystrix, Family: Tettigoniidae), Costa Rica, Cartago Province.

Here's some more info from Wikipedia:

Markia hystrix is a species of katydid in the subfamily Phaneropterinae. It occurs in South America. A common name for it is lichen katydid because it lives surrounded by Usnea lichen on which it sustains itself.

Did I say some? Well, I meant the only. I checked the usual other sources like EOL (encyclopedia of life) but I couldn't find much info either. I guess it's a poorly described species and honestly I am too lazy to dub into the scientific literature to find more, if there's any, info about it. I guess
even knowing such a weird creature is out there is enough :)

By the way, the guy who uploaded this video has some other cool videos too, like this crazy looking spider know as the "Demon Horned Orb-Weaver Spider" (Macracantha Arcuata):

Or this Flatid Planthopper Nymph (Flatidae, Fulgoroidea) that looks like a walking pop corn, lmao:

He even has a video of what is imo the weirdest looking insect, the globe-bearing Treehopper (Bocydium globulare) which looks like a helicopter bug:

So yeah, check his channel out, definitely worth a sub if you are into nature and stuff.

Ok, enough weird critters for today!

Same here, although I once found a dead earthworm like worm on my yard... It was about a meter long and tangled along it some hedgehog spikes with fresh skin and blood still attached to them. Always wondered what the fuck actually happened. Did they battle to the death or something 🧐

I was sitting here one day and a sawyer beetle decided to start fighting with a lightbulb. Then it freaked out and started ramming into walls and everything else, making way too much noise and just being stupid, so I grabbed it and squished. Used a tissue of course because fuck that if I'm going touch it. Then I looked close at the guts and noticed hundreds, maybe thousands of tiny yellow spider-like mite things (I don't know wtf they were) running in all directions and up my arm. Can't explain that. Nobody even believes me...

All three of them are wonderfully weird😂😂.
I say we should forget about the origami looking katydid. Let's look at the spider, it's legit about to tip over. 😂😂😂

Saludos @trumpman

I'm done reading your article and watching all your videos you've posted about strange insects.
My mouth is still hanging open!
I would never say they are horrible insects, they are just strange, very strange. The last one I could mistake for an alien because of how strange it is.... Although I've never seen an alien but they are always described as strange like that. But I liked your article, it's good to know the nature....
Greetings @trumpman

Nature never stops to amaze us, if we could only replicate what it can do humanity would open new horizons. So many ideas that we could harvest from simply observing the species around us.

It is pretty awesome how insects and other arthropods can have a specific camouflage for ONE specific plant! if he goes to another plant, he will show up lol
