Polishing silver with baking soda

avatar
(Edited)

So I found this recipe on how to polish silver that seemed simple and gentle and decided to give it a try...mostly because I had nothing better to do and out of curiosity, not that I plans to do it with my old pieces!

Pretty basic stuff. Water and soda.

I decided to try it on my silver 6 pence from Australia, first because it looked like total shit. And second because I think it doesn't have much value anyways. To save on the soda I just used a plastic cap from a milk bottle:

So here are the results after just one bath

Not bad! Unfortunately the red cum stain seemed unaffected...if you have any ideas about it let me know!

I remember this video, I know Silver Dragons when his handle used to be Silver Baggins before Warner BRos hit him with a Cease & Desist order from using the 'Baggins' LOTR Trademark.

The process works nice on low value silver coins.

Although there are still speckles of stains even after polishing, I still think the result is astonishing after you polished them. It was even good you firstly tried it on a cheaper coin. But if you keep polishing it even after this, wouldn't it lose its essence?

It’s nice to see that these method of polishing it worked. After polishing it, can it still be used to purchase stuffs and still have high value? I never knew they can be polished.

hmmm...
I clean my very old silver under running water and a gentle, soft brush and wipe it of using a cotton cloth.

Old housewives trick and always works. Hydrochloric acid will get rid of the cum stain quite comfortably along with the coin lol.

LMAO. 😂😂😂

Sorry for being a graduate from the Killjoke University but HCl would not react with the Silver Coin. Nitric Acid would do the job. No Coin, No red stain 😂😂 only red fumes!

It looks much better after the cleaning. I hope other people are able to help you remove the red cum stains.

That's truly impressive. Recently I tried cleaning one of my silvers with warm water mixed with detergent. Let it soak for 5 hours then rub with a cloth. Results were accepted but not as good as jewellery cleaners !
