Halos around the moon!

A couple of weeks ago I got lucky enough to witness one of the bizarre yet spectacular phenomena I once used to blog about!

It was around 11 at night and I was scrolling down my Facebook feed when I saw a post of a photo like this saying "Have you seen the sky tonight?"

I immediately jumped out of the couch and got on the balcony to view a spectacular cold moon surrounded by a bright halo! The feeling was indescribable, out in the cold, total peace (the good things of living on a hill outside the village) and a hole in the sky almost sucking you in it but at the same time you were sucking so much good energy out of it!

What was it?

It was simply an optical illusion created by frozen water droplets. Ice crystals floating in the upper troposphere refract and reflect the light from the Sun or Moon offering this beautiful light show. Very often, this phenomenon is an angel of cold weather and it did got pretty cold the following days. Source

Halos are not the only illusions ice crystals create, sun dogs, diamond dust and light pillars are a couple more fascinating shows nature can put up.
