Enzymes: Building Blocks of Health

Enzymes are catalysts in nourishing life. They enhance thousands of chemical reactions in our body that control life’s process. All actions from breathing, thinking, digestion to moving your legs and body are possible because of enzymes. It has also been suggested that enzymes cure cancers. It is vital to the cleansing and rebuilding of our blood, immune system, and ultimately our bodies, as it helps detoxify the body to maintain balance within our internal environment.

Enzymes have specific functions in our body:

Digestive enzymes help break down, deliver, and assimilate food nutrients. The more processed food our diets are made of, the more we need enzyme activity to expel unhealthy waster material.

Metabolic enzymes catalyze energy production and detoxification of cells. They build the body and provide antioxidant activity. While our bodies manufacture a natural supply of enzymes, they are also found in food. As we age, the fully charged enzyme storage bank we are born with depletes naturally and decreases. A study shows that by the time we are 60 we will have 50% less enzymes than when we were 30. However, the life span of enzymes can be extended if we help them by adding and ingesting enzymes from food.

Unfortunately, we can only get the benefits of enzymes from raw food since enzymes are sensitive to temperatures above 118 degrees farenheit. Even cooking from low to moderate heat kills most enzymes. they are lost by prolonged exposure to air, processing, drying and using a microwave oven. The are also adversely affected by alcohol, caffeine, fluorides, chlorine in water, air pollution, chemical additives and drugs.

Taking enzyme supplements help prevent depletion in the body. Drinking fruit juices and eating vegetables are also a great way to power up the enzymes. All fresh uncooked food are abundant in enzymes. The best sources are bananas, papaya, mangoes, avocados, and pineapples. Young sprouts are the richest source.

Fatigue, premature aging and weight gain are sure signs of enzyme deficiency. Low enzymes leave us with undigested food in the blood that, not only cause stubborn love handles to develop on our waist, but triggers a domino effect of unhealthy reactions with the system leading to degenerative illnesses. The good news is that this toxic build up from unhealthy eating habits can be melted away by keeping our enzyme levels up. It is important to build enzymes in our body on a daily basis by choosing our food intelligently.
