Project Water Tank 7000L

avatar

Today I would like to present one of my projects, my water tank for collecting rainwater.
I decided to collect the rainwater for 3 reasons:
The first reason is that my farm is located on a former open-cast mining area and the quality of the groundwater is not particularly high, which bothers me because I want to use it to water my garden.
The second reason is the roof area of approx. 100m2 which is too good to leave unused.
The last and actually most important reason is that it simply makes sense to use rainwater in order not to waste drinking water unnecessarily.

A friend was so kind to help me with this project, as the size of the tank was quite large & securing the load with two people is much easier than it is alone.
Back at the farm, we decided to bring the excavator into the team (an Atlas 1304 from 1989) because otherwise we would probably have had to toil for days in the heat. The pit was dug in just 1.5 hours.
Inserting the tank with the excavator was a bit tricky and would probably have been difficult without help ...
The subsequent filling with sand was quick, because the tank has a lot of volume.

At the end we made an inlet basin, where the first filtration of the water takes place.
There is a pump in the tank that is connected to water taps on my property, which makes it much easier to remove the rainwater.
Today I can say that the project was absolutely worth it, because I was able to collect a lot of water and use it for my garden

What a great idea, and I can imagine how long it would have taken to dig that hole, and how much easier it was to place the tank with the help of the excavator! I also like your concrete catch basin to catch the water from the downspout!

Now that is a serious tank! Excellent post and very interesting.

If you were to use it for drinking water too, how much additional filtration and processing would it need to make it 100% potable? For drinking water, do the tanks need to be made from some sort of food-grade plastic?

thanks for your feedback :)

to get drinking water this way is a great idea in general but here in germany and for me it wouldnt make too sense because the water out of any regular faucet is drinking water. thats also why i cant tell you much atm about the food-grade plastic because i havent digged into that topic too much. i was just looking for a water tank in general.

Thanks for the reply. Same issues here in the UK too about the tap water being perfect but it was just a thought about a further step towards off-grid life!
Have a great weekend and keep up the great posts :-)
