Solved example on Engineering materials | Material Science
Question: Based on above figure find...
(A) Which metallic alloy is lightest.
(B) Which Ceramic is heaviest.
(C) Which Metallic alloy is stiffest.
(D) Which Elastomer is least stiff.
(E) Which Polymer is heaviest.
Solution:
1. We know that material is said to be light. When it has low density. It is said to be heavy, when it has high density. Therefore from graph, material with highest value of density is heaviest and vice-versa.
2. A stiff material has a high Young's modulus. Therefore from graph, material with highest value of Young's modulus is stiffest and vice-versa
Taking above two points in consideration the answers to about mentioned questions are as follows.
(A) Mg alloys
(B) WC
(C) W alloys
(D) Neoprene
(E) PTFE
