Question: What are the similarities and differences between horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) and vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT)?

1. Differences

  • Rotating axis of VAWT is perpendicular to direction of wind. While in case of HAWT it is parallel to direction of wind.
  • Efficiency in VAWT is low. While in case of HAWT is high.
  • Maintenance cost in case of VAWT is low. While in HAWT it is high.

2. Similarities

  • Both are work producing devices.
  • Both are good options for electricity generation.
  • Both involve fatigue and bending moments.
