Are you ready for another educational video? If your answer is yes! Then get ready to take a trip to the microscopic world and know everything about Zoogloea. It is a Biological term that almost nobody knows about but they are common in aquariums with natural plantings! The interesting thing about seeing these microorganisms under the magnifying glass is that there is clearly a morphological and physiological differentiation, they are all different and carry out crucial work within the aquatic system!πŸ‘¨β€πŸ«πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ“

I am an expert in aquariums and recently I assembled a 100 liter aquarium with a natural planting, it is actually a little more advanced than a LOW TEC, and from knowledge and experience I know that when we make an aquarium assembly when placing the substrate a "slime" will appear white that will border all our trunks and plants, in reality this biological phenomenon happens because the water has a high level of nutrients and as a consequence these colonies of bacteria are formed!πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»πŸ§«

Answering our question which is: (Zoogloea) well then we can define it as a biofilm or small layer that is formed in a certain space and that is composed of thousands of microorganisms in the form of colonies! it actually looks like bacilli or small, fine cylinders that clump together in large numbers!😲🧫

This is what a Zoogloea biofilm looks like out of water, it looks sticky and slimy, but when we take it to the microscope we see an amazing image composed of thousands of bacteria, the truth is that they are harmless in our aquarium and what they do is feed on the nutrients, too help break down ammonia! I always advise removing it little by little because it makes our aquarium look ugly!πŸ‘¨β€πŸ«πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ“

Your Biological characteristics are classified by your breathing as "aerobic" what does this mean? that to carry out respiration and physiological function they must take the O2 from the medium, they are also classified as "gram-negative", that is, they do not stain blue when we put a staining compound such as methylene blue or lugol! In fact, in the teniΓ±a sample we will see that the branches or bacilli do not stain!πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’™

It is the first time that I see specimens of spirochetes, I think I have not seen some since college, and it is interesting because they only grow here in the zoogloea, which gives us an idea that it is a rich medium where specific organisms can grow! spirochetes are a perfect example of gram negative cells their cells are elongated similar to a "zig zag" of course we cannot close the post if we do not see the movements of the spirochetes enjoy my video!πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ§«

Already here we can see the layer of colonies in a Zoogloea there are so many that it is not enough to differentiate but with a larger zoom we begin to see small details of the bacilli and other bacteria that join the colony, I read on the internet that the zoogloea is composed of "Zoogloeaceae" is how the "family" is classified taxonomically!πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»πŸ€“

what happens is that they appear to be in the form of branches but are linked with "extracellular polymers" in the form of fibrils! All the "slime" is a group of polysaccharides, it is very interesting to study them because they have the property of carrying out: "flocculation" of extracellular material or "the famous slime" the problem is that they are insoluble in water and that is why they cannot disintegrate in the Water!🧠πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬

Do you know what caught my attention? that when looking for scientific works such as this: (Infante, 2011) "the extracellular matrix expelled by zoogloeas serve at the physical-chemical level as wastewater treatment, just like the manufacture of biodegradable plastic" it is very interesting to see how the author gives us a different approach and the various uses that these bacteria have in improving our environment! so it would be interesting to continue to carry out studies on them!πŸ˜²πŸ‘¨β€πŸ«

Interesting. :) The name reminds me of neuroglia (glial cells in the brain), do you know if zooglea and neuroglia have anything in common or similar, or just a coincidence in the naming?

Hello friend, thanks for commenting, I think it is a coincidence, these bacteria are specific and only grow in these environments! But let's hope if another reader contributes something to your comment that is very interesting!
