Greetings, today I ventured into a system of caves in the mountain range of Aire e Candeeiros we are referring to the center of Portugal, something that caught my attention is that not only do you visit a cave with millions of years if you do not learn about how these are formed rocks, so my post is a review about this impressive tourist site and at the same time I will be explaining what I learned about the cave system, sit back and enjoy my post!👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

First of all I would like to explain a little about the site since if you decide to go sightseeing in Portugal I recommend you visit the cave to get a good learning! In this mountain range there are 4 important caves that, although they are not connected to each other, are all impressive and tell great stories! I visited 3/4, I only need to know the "Santo Antonio grotto", surely you will think that they all have the same characteristics and no! each cave has different types of minerals and of course different ecologies! I already went to a cave where there are no animals living inside! and this one does feature animals of various kinds, including insects and bats!😮😮

Well as I mentioned before, the cave of Alvados and the cave of Santo Antonio are close to each other, they are separated by about 2.5 km and have very different characteristics and depths, the "Alvados caves" are located exactly in a protected natural park , this system of caves have a great historical and scientific value, they are composed of calcareous material! When we arrived in the area, the first thing that caught my attention was the beautiful landscape that this tourist site has, its vegetation is made up of bushes and small trees, there are many giant holes that are formed by the material that the mountain range is made of!🤯🤯

img_4589.jpg

img_4590.jpg

When the mountains are made of calcareous material, it can happen that there are many stones suspended on the surface and we clearly see some mountains that constantly release rocks everywhere, rain is also a crucial factor for the formation of caves since it is basically what makes the erosion on mountain surfaces! pay 6 euros to be able to enter the cave, but you don't do it alone! It is a guided tour with an expert in the field who will clarify all your doubts! While we did the tour that lasted 30 minutes, we entered various depths until we reached almost 100 meters below the surface!🤔🤔

HISTORY🌄⛲/HISTORIA🧠👨‍🏫

img_4603.jpg

img_4605.jpg

img_4608.jpg

I loved the history of the cave because like all impressive things it was discovered by "chance", well this cave system was discovered in 1964 basically it was a recent discovery, near the area there was a small quarry company that extracted rocks from the area, a group of workers when they passed through a "hole" in the ground they were curious because when they threw a small stone it took a long time to reach the ground! In their free time, the four friends began to make small excursions and went down through the small hole that was on the surface until they discovered a large cave system!😏😶

img_4615.jpg

img_4617.jpg

img_4619.jpg

A short time later in 1973 the caves were opened to the public, but there was a problem the cave was divided into 2 tunnels and people could not access through the "original entrance" because it was a 60 meter drop, so a tunnel was opened that will connect the entire cave, among the natural objects to learn within this cave are the stalactites, stalagmites, underground lagoons, also small "oolitic" formations, not to mention the biodiversity that exists within this cave system!🤯😱🤓🤓

webp.net_gifmaker_2_.gif

This is an "underground world" because everything here can be many more years old than any inorganic form outside, we can find rocky structures that are up to 20,000 years old, also not any living being can inhabit an area where the electricity does not exist and food is very limited! That's why insects have adaptations to live without using their sense of vision!😬🤯👨‍🎓

This beautiful and surprising system of caves has an area of more than 400 meters that you can visit, the length between its compartments is 40 meters and it has a height of almost 100 meters, the ventilation system is constant so the cave always has small currents of air, in addition its temperature is also constant and is around 16 to 18 degrees! when we walk through the narrow corridors we are taking a leap in time of more than 50 thousand years special lighting systems were placed to highlight the natural colors of the minerals!🤩🤩

You cannot think that this cave system is monotonous because it is made up of a varied system of cameras that are connected to each other, I also had the privilege of photographing a small lake that is so deep that you cannot see the bottom and was formed by the erosion of drops of water for thousands of years, our guide told us that it is normal for rocks to be given "names" in caves because for years our imagination inspired us to look for certain "similarities" of rocks with common objects !🤔😏

img_4577.jpg

img_4655.jpg

img_4657.jpg

We could define a cave as a system of cavities that are created by certain erosion produced by water! but not only the natural element "water" can create a cave system, it can also be done by ice or lava from a volcano, a cave can also be formed by the interaction of several factors already mentioned! the normal thing is to see a cave that is formed by the "acid" erosion of the water that makes contact with rocks of "limestone" material.😏😏

webp.net_gifmaker_2_.gif

img_4659.jpg

img_4663.jpg

I could not finish this post without explaining what a stalactite is, it is actually a rock formation that usually forms on the "roof" of caves, they have a thin and pointed elongated appearance, so that a stalactite forms in a cave the water it has to drip from the roof and in its path it leaves behind small carbonate particles. This happens because the water is a bit acidic and "erodes" the rock.😍😍

img_4667.jpg

img_4673.jpg

img_4674.jpg

We can find colors in the stones that are due to minerals, for example this rock is green but it is because it contains moss! And you wonder how moss grows in a place where there is no light? actually although there is no natural light, artificial light is enough for plants to grow! I saw some spiders, and if there are spiders be sure that there are many insects to wander around inside the cave!💥🍀🍀

img_4678.jpg

img_4680.jpg

img_4682.jpg

Now let's explain what a stalagmite is, we could also define it as a calcareous formation with characteristics very similar to stalagmites but instead of growing on the ceiling of the cave it grows on the ground by the same water erosion system, here the water hits the soil with small dissolved minerals and when they reach the ground they accumulate forming a fine and elongated "mound"!🤯🤯😱

img_4688.jpg

img_4693.jpg

img_4695.jpg

img_4697.jpg

img_4700.jpg

img_4704.jpg

If you look carefully at the last photo, in the distance there is a surface on the ceiling of the cave, this was exactly where the 4 friends entered the cave for the first time, there is a height of 80 meters and if we look down we see remains of animal bones, this means that accidentally many animals over the years fell through the tunnels of the caves and died down here!😯😯

Many people worked to excavate the Alvados cave, and this excavation lasted approximately two years, according to scientists this information is very important to know the age of a stalactite or stalagmite, it takes almost 5000 years for the rock to grow about 2.5cm! What if I told you that in the cave there is a stalactite with a size of 15 meters? how old are you? AMAZING, RIGHT...💥💦
INCREIBLE NO...❗🛑

The experts who studied this cave system believe that its formation dates back to the Jurassic, that is, when the dinosaurs ruled the earth and caves like these existed, this last photo is impressive because we can see all the types of rock formations that occur in the cave, If you pay attention there are stalactites of different colors and this is due to the minerals that compose them!💥💥

img_4891.jpg

I was forbidden to use a flash in the cave and to carry a tripod so it was very difficult to take good photos, but more or less this is what a stalactite or stalagmite looks like if it were cut in half!

It was a fantastic experience to be able to enter this cave system here and learn a lot about this mysterious and very old world about which little is investigated! It was a great investment to have chosen this site to create a post and learn together! I advise you if you ever enter places like this do not touch anything, it would be very bad to break some small stalactite formation, basically in an instant you destroy thousands of years of formation!💥💥
