Inside a Military Fort💂🧠 / Dentro de un Fuerte Militar💥

I always wanted to visit a military fort to learn about its history and experience how a soldier lived inside these highly fortified walls. To fulfill my goal, I traveled 120km to the city of Elvas, which is practically 20km from the border with Spain! And this already gives us an idea of why it was built here, throughout history the Spanish always wanted to invade the Portuguese territory and the fort fulfilled an important mission... Keep away the enemy troops!💣💣

What is a military fort?🏰/ Que es un fuerte militar⚔️

A military fort is a fortified structure that has military purposes and is built with the purpose of defending a certain territory! many times they are built between borders to detect enemy movements, or on cliffs to spot enemy ships! what really matters in a fort is its location! they are all built on strategic sites! the fort "Nossa senhora da Graca" is located at the highest point of the city which gives it a wide view of 360 degrees!⚒️⛏️

Photo/Foto: Wikipedia

Almost all military forts built after the 17th century have a star-shaped design! and it was one of my doubts, which was answered by our military guide, the forts were built with this design so that the cannons never crossed each other! in this way cannons were placed at all ends giving a possibility of firing at all angles! It was incredible because let's remember that in the 17th century people did not have studies, they were "illiterate" but seeing the design of the forts tells us how intelligent these people were!💣💥

history of the fort😱 / Historia del fuerte👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

There are many people who see these boring topics but for me it is general culture and we learn too much about war topics, I learned a lot on this visit! this fort was built in "1763", it is a Portuguese relic and was declared a world heritage "by UNESCO in 2012", its function was to protect the city of Elvas from the "Spanish, French" enemies. It looks like a new construction but in reality before the fort was built centuries ago the Romans and the Visigoths lived in the Elvas region! Thousands of years ago the fort's walls had already been used in the Age of Discovery!🕵️‍♀️

Historical record👀/ Record historico💪

The military fort "Nossa senhora da Graca" has a record that not everyone can achieve, it is the only Portuguese military fort to NEVER BE INVADED!!, its structure and design is very well executed to the point that it has more than 6 reinforced doors and 3 floors until you reach the military chief who slept on the third floor! In other words, the enemy to conquer this fort had to destroy the 6 gates, go through more than 50 gunpowder cannons, then kill 300 soldiers, to go up to the top floor! it was an impossible feat! and although several assaults were made, neither Napoleon's French nor the Spanish managed to pass the first gate.💥💣

Curiosities of the military fort🏰/ Curiosidades del fuerte militar👨‍🏫

What surely to you are "holes in the ground" for the military fort had a very sinister purpose! these small excavations were made around the wall, and were filled with sharp wooden stakes that were covered with rotting animal meat! when the enemy tried to climb the first wall of the wall with stairs they fell and these stakes were driven in, later the soldier got sick with bacteria due to the rotten meat on the ends! and remember that at that time there were no antibiotics! practically the enemy ran into this first great difficulty! that is if they managed to get here since each cannon that fired had a range of 100-150 meters!🧠🛑

At that time there was no football or any kind of entertainment! then basically what these people knew how to do best was "fight" and their survival instinct was that "hope" that pushed them to do everything possible to escape unscathed from the fights! the fort built a tunnel of more than 5 km that helped the troops to escape if the fort was "conquered", at the same time these tunnels served as a means of communication between the "chief of the city" and the commander of the fort! In a war situation, no one individually thought that everything had to be "synchronized" so no one did anything until all the bosses were in touch!👀🙇‍♂️

The tunnel had a division about 120 meters away that was baptized as "powder store" here in this space tons of gunpowder were stored to be used in weapons and cannons! It is easy for us to get here because we have lamps, but before they had to guide themselves with candles or torches! Can you imagine walking in a tunnel full of gunpowder with a torch? It is believed that many soldiers lost their lives in this warehouse due to accidents!👨‍🎓

Here we see the architecture of the tunnel, firstly we are struck by the fact that there are some holes in the walls, and they served as air ducts to keep the powder store dry, when you enter the tunnel the "ceiling" is a few meters long but as you As you advance, it goes up to the "roof, reaching 3 meters in height! This had a purpose, it served to circulate the air inside the tunnels and avoid heat and suffocation due to lack of oxygen! How clever, right?

Historians had to investigate why there were walls in the corners with holes, they wondered what function these holes had? and when studying them better they observed that they were built between 2 cannons, that is, if the enemy managed to climb the wall, the first thing he saw was an "empty" wall but that on the other side it had a hole... Of course, there was also a cannon here! the unprotected spaces of the wall were practically covered! EVERYTHING WAS MILLIMETRICLY THOUGHT OUT!

I bet you thought they were cannonballs... But no!! You are in the presence of balls used thousands of years ago by the Romans! Do you know how??? on catapults... Hundreds of these balls were unearthed in the city of Elvas, and we can already imagine the Romans fighting against the Arabs to conquer the walled city!!!

The soldiers who were "300" slept in rooms on the first floor of the fort! separated from the high-ranking soldiers who slept on the top floor! The soldiers never walked exposed in the fort, they moved between passageways, to avoid being hit by cannonballs! a soldier was entitled to 2 liters of water per day! it was hard work!! and the Elvas region is known for its hot 40 degree summers!🏰🏰

This fort communicated with another small fort that served as a lookout point! And if you look closely at the surroundings, it was filled with water, making it impossible for enemy soldiers to enter its walls! when this small fort observed some French troops, they communicated with the general of the larger fort and then communicated with the general of the city! and between the 3 make a decision! ALL THIS HAPPENED IN THE TUNNELS!

The first photos are the barracks where the general of the fort slept, as you can see a cannon could not hit directly there because of the distance between the first wall and the height of the main room! therefore an enemy cannonball that wanted to destroy the general's room hit the second wall of the fort! the last photo is a passageway that connected the city with the fort!

When I learned the story of that character I was shocked! These gentlemen are known as "cannon decoy" and they are those prisoners who committed some crime, the king set them free but to be free they had to spend a few days there... Unprotected only with a spear in hand!! in the medieval era it was common to attack a wall with catapults, or rain of arrows!! therefore these prisoners... They hardly got their freedom!

This is the system of pulleys that open and close the doors of the wall, as you can see they were made of wood, the originals are still in good condition! At this point of the tour we reach the third floor of the fortress and it is the area where the general rests and there are also the private bathrooms! and private because they were only used by high-ranking soldiers, the rest of the soldiers had to defecate in a hole in the wall, they had no right to sit!

Here we see original cannonballs, they weigh between 3 to 4 kg depending on the caliber of the cannon! Inside the fort an area of religious worship was built, the soldiers only knew how to do two things, fight and pray!

Before, people were small, the average Portuguese was 1.40, 1.50cm, that's why we see all the very small doors.

these two photos are very interesting firstly we see the uniform of the portuguese soldier from the 18th century, we also see a piece that is placed on the floor of the fort! what they did is place sand so that when it rained the water would be filtered through the sand and could be ingested! smart right?

Here we see the barrel more closely, it was made in the era of the French invasions, it is 9 millimeters, and the base was made of wood! many don't know but a cannon can not only shoot an iron ball, it can practically shoot anything!

We arrived at the general's room, here the fort manager and his commanders practically slept, they never shared space with the common soldiers, the space was divided into 2 parts, both groups shared space on the floor, everyone slept on the floor! only kings and royals slept in beds! then we see photos of the kitchen area, a pantry to put water and finally some stairs to reach the highest point of the fortress!

It was common for a structure to have a water well, and the fortress was no exception, the well was filled with rainwater that was then filtered through the aforementioned sand to finally be used by the soldiers! Let's remember that there were 300 of them and everyone had the right to 2 liters of water per day!
