"Birth" of a Daphnia🧠👶/ "Parto" de una Daphnia📚🔬

If I don't do this experiment you would probably think that the microscopic world is very simple "because it is not similar to us" but in reality it is more complex than you imagine! In this post we are going to observe "a water flea under controlled conditions" and we will see how the babies develop inside it and at the same time we will see how complex this group of animals is!📚🔬🧠

Well, to understand a little about how my little experiment worked, I extracted from stagnant fresh water an adult specimen of: (Daphnia) whose species I identified as: (Daphnia logispina), if I calculate it does not fail me, it means about: (2 millimeters), therefore it is an animal that is not microscopic because we could see it swimming in the water due to its "large size", the advantage of studying this specimen of Daphnia is because they are translucent and light passes through them easily, which makes it easier for us to see and count the embryos , make an estimate and this female that I named "lulu" had 19 eggs" as I captured it in a pond they end up being translucent but the color can vary depending on the water conditions!🤔👨‍🏫📚

The incubation period of water fleas is fascinating and they must make up to five "molts in their exoskeleton" to reach sexual maturity! Under normal conditions with a temperature between 20-28 degrees these animals make several changes in the same day, and the process happens between 15-20 minutes before laying a group of eggs! when I captured "lulu" she already had her fertilized eggs but they were very small and I only appreciated her "compound eyes" here in the video you can see the first stages of incubation of the water flea, as they are filter feeders the water where it was had enough "detritus" and algae so that it could be fed, it was with me about 3 days in the test tube.🤯👨‍🏫🧠

Life expectancy👨‍🏫🧠/ Esperanza de vida🙇‍♂️📚

These animals are (parthenogenetic) a large part of the year and this indicates that a large population of (Daphnia logispina) are female during the year, since they can also reproduce asexually, the ovary has direct communication with "the oviduct" , which in turn communicates with the incubation chamber! When the eggs arrive from the oviduct to the incubation chamber, they begin to develop until they complete their embryonic development! From what I was able to observe this species: (Daphnia logispina) has a "direct post-embryonic" development, that is, when the offspring leave the mother they are fully developed and independent!🧠👨‍💻🔬

It is difficult to estimate the embryonic state of these animals as they vary between species and environmental conditions! "lulu" my female water flea had an embryonic development of 24 hours maybe a little less and her eggs were a little developed so I had to make an estimate! and coincides with the cited work where the "embryonic development of C. reticulata and D magna lasted 16 hours and 24 hours"🔬🙇‍♂️

Last day and birth👨‍🏫👶/ Último día y nacimiento🙇‍♂️📚

It is very difficult to draw a good conclusion about the work since I don't know if under conditions of stress for the animal the eggs hatch faster or slower, it is something that few scientists analyze in their work! but the fact is that almost all of them were born alive, I would say 98% of all were fit to swim and looked good! the mother died after a few hours concidence? or stress? More than a scientific approach, seeing the microscopic birth of an animal that is "almost invisible" is a good opportunity for me to show you how complex the animal kingdom is!🧠👨‍💻
