THEORETICAL MODEL OF THE NORMAL DISTRIBUTION// MODELO TEÓRICO DE LA DISTRIBUCIÓN NORMAL

(Edited)

It is the most widely used theoretical model within Classical statistics. Its graph is that of a curve symmetrical to the central axis μ (Population arithmetic mean). Graph 1

The properties of the normal curve are as follows:

👉 Symmetrical character, the deviations in both directions of the μ axis are equal.

👉 The curve is infinite, it extends to infinity very close to the x axis, without cutting it.

👉 Mathematicians have shown that 68.27% of the values are in the interval (‐σ, +σ), that in the interval (‐2σ, +2σ) 95.45% are found and that in the interval (‐3σ, +3σ), 99.73% of the values are found.

Many of the variables that can be studied in biology, in particular in medicine, are governed by the normal theoretical distribution model. The height, body weight, temperature, and in general different characteristics of a population, are distributed forming a normal curve.

¡Very important!

The values μ (population mean) and σ (population standard deviation), known as parameters of the normal distribution, are specific values for each distribution, so it individualizes or particularizes them.

For each value of μ the curve moves its central axis on the X axis; the variation of the σ value makes the height of the curve vary. A very important property of the theoretical normal distribution model is that it refers to the area under the curve of the normal distribution. Recall, in the interval:

👉 μ ±σ includes 68.27% of the area under the curve.

👉 μ ± 2σ 95.45% of the area under the curve is included.

👉 μ ± 3σ 99.73% of the area under the curve is included.

Let's look at this property in the following graph. Graph 2

Let's look at some simple examples:
If we know that the average age of a population of individuals (hivers) of the @StemSocial community who earn rewards from the #posh token for promoting their articles on #twitter is 30 years, with a standard deviation of 3 years, we can say that:

👉 68% (disregarding the 0.27) of that population of hivers, is between 27 and 33 years old: (30-3; 30+3) = (27; 33).

👉 95% are between 24 and 36 years old. (30‐2(3); 30+2(3)) = (24; 36).

👉 All of the Hivers are between 21 and 39 years old. (30‐3(3); 30+3(3)) = (21; 39).

That is, knowing that the variable follows a normal distribution, what are its population parameters μ and σ, and the property of the area under the curve, it is simple to determine the behavior of the population.

Veamos algunos ejemplos sencillos:

Another example:

We know that the height variable follows a normal distribution within the same population mentioned above and we also know that the height is 165 cms. with a standard deviation σ of 7.4 cms. We can infer that:

👉 68% of the population has a height between: (165.2‐7.4; 165.2+7.4) = (157.8; 172.6).

👉 95% of the population has a height between: (165.2‐2(7.4); 165.2+2(7.4)) = (150.4; 180.0).

👉 99% of the population has a height between: (165.2‐3(7.4); 165.2+3(7.4)) = (143.0; 187.4).

Another interpretation is as follows:

👉 The probability of finding a hivers whose height is between 157.8 and 172.6 is 0.6827.

👉 The probability of finding hivers whose height is between 150.4 and 180.0 is 0.95.45.

👉 The probability of finding hivers whose height is between 143.0 and 187.4 is 0.99.73.

Another practical application of the normal distribution model is the definition of normality ranges for a variable that follows this distribution model; based on the results obtained from repeated investigations into the behavior of the variable in question, the researcher defines the population parameters of the variable (mean μ and standard deviation σ) and establishes the ranges.

Otro ejemplo:

For example:

The qualification of a test or attitude test (widely used by psychologists), is based on the intervals of the normal curve in the following sense and establishes:

  • If the value obtained in the test is between μ-σ, μ+σ, it is considered approved.

  • If the value obtained in the test is between 0, μ-σ, it is considered disapproved.

  • If the value obtained in the test is between μ+σ, ∞, it is considered suitable.

Well so far today's topic in an upcoming post I will be talking about the standard normal distribution, widely used in the field of statistics and I will give you an example of how to calculate it in the statistical program SPSS.

Until next time.👋👋👋
