Comet Neowise makes 7,000 year return tour of solar system

What a great time it is for watchers of the night sky. After 7,000 years comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) makes a return trip to our solar system. Experts say that it should be visible to the naked eye in the northern hemisphere, primarily in Canada and the US. From around 12-15 July, the comet should be visible at dusk giving observers the best opportunities to see this once in a lifetime event. The closest approach to earth (64 million miles (103 million km)) is expected between 22-23 July 2020.

The previoue "great comet" encounter was in 1997 with the 4,000 year return trip of comet Hale-Bopp during at which time the comet remained visible for 18 months.

This is a momentous time for professional and amateure astronomers alike.
