Can Supercapacitors Become A Serious Contender To LiOn Batteries?
Lithium ion batteries represent a revolutionary advance in energy storage technology and their application run the gambit utility grids, businesses, homes, automobiles and portable electronics. However, they have downsides. There is the fire Hazzard risk due to over heating, short circuiting and improper charging, as the most prominent examples. Then, there is the matter of durability and longevity. Over time, lithium batteries build up dendrites which degrades charging capacity and shortens service life.
Supercapacitors have their own shortcomings but new advances are emerging that may make them viable contenders to the dominance of lithium ion batteries.
