A Journey on learning how to code

avatar

When it comes to self-improvement, we are too excited to take one or more courses, either free or paid. However, there is one problem that is often faced, and I am sure this problem is not the only one who has experienced it.

This problem is more of a personal problem and ourselves. The first problem is getting started, and the second problem is finishing what we started.

An example is my journey in learning to code, I've started from Codecademy, also FreeCodeCamp, what's interesting is how the tortuous process often makes someone stop.

FreeCodeCamp

I joined FreeCodeCamp around October 2015, and my longest streak was 23 days, and that was over five years ago.

Time passed, people came and went, the curriculum increased, the number of hours increased. When I see the current curriculum, I am so excited that I have to try something new again.

I Bought a Course on Udemy

This is what's worse, I bought a paid class and haven't finished it until now, not a good example. I purchased The Complete 2021 Web Development Bootcamp from Dr. Angela Yu, and I purchased this course late 2018.

Become a full-stack web developer with just one course. HTML, CSS, Javascript, Node, React, MongoDB and more!

Feel loss? Of course not, because I am one of those people who are willing to spend money on positive things such as buying books and courses to develop myself, what I lose is when I don't finish what I started.

So What's The Plan?

Without realizing it is now June, the journey of one year has entered half. My target in the next six months is to finish the course I bought on Udemy and also get three certificates from FreeCodeCamp by the end of 2021.

Actually, this is a target that is not too difficult to achieve for some people, for me? As you can see, I have started it in 2015 and 2018, but there is no result.

I just have to discipline myself more strictly, start socializing again and be more active in the coding and programming community.

Actually, there are other targets that I want to achieve, but for now, I will focus on the two targets above.

Earn three certificates from FreeCodeCamp and complete The Complete 2021 Web Development Bootcamp course from Udemy.

Hi there, thank you. Learning with friends and community is very helpful if one day we are in trouble and lose enthusiasm, I hope you are also successful in learning how to code.

I recognise that. I have tried to learn Python on 3 different occasions but never get very far. It's hard learning alone. 😊

That's right, it's the community that keeps us motivated and helps us when we're in trouble, thanks for stopping by.

If you want to test your skill, every oktober there's Hacktoberfest. I wonder if you've heard of it and have tried contributing in it. It's interesting event especially if you are into open source program. https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/

Thank you, Mac. I've heard and skimmed, but haven't tried it yet, it's still June now, and I think I still have three months to see what I can contribute to the OSS app later at Hacktoberfest.

Good luck with your studies!

It's not easy to be consistent especially with our busy lifes, work, relationship and the general stress of a daily life.

I do study IT as well and I'm always trying to improve my qualifications and in the recent couple of years with the Covid rather than going forward with my studies I have been lazy and did not achieve much!

And as you say it in you post we need to work on our discipline and motivation! I'm also trying to use Hive as a motivator, I'm planning to record my study sessions here on Hive and that may be an extra motivation to make me consistent in that project!

I do love python and would like to learn it as well, one day maybe!

Good luck again, and why don't you use Hive as a diary of your studies like I was thinking to do with my Networking studies?

Cheers!

This seems to be a common problem faced by almost everyone who is learning new things.

Motivation and discipline are two factors that must be solved. Making Hive a reward in the form of crypto as a motivation in learning and documentation media can also be a solution that must be tried.

Talking about Python, I do love Python too, this is a language that can be used in almost all fields and aspects, if you are learning Networking, this python will be very helpful in Automation, in the past SysAdmin and Network Administrators depended on Perl and Bash, but Python is the prima donna new especially when the creator was recruited by Google. Ah, I've also learned Python a few times, but as I mentioned within the post above and like @gillianpearce's comment, I didn't finish and didn't make project using Python.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your views on using Hive as my study diary as you are about to do, this is a really interesting idea, as are familiar to #100DaysOfCode.

Cheers!

Absolutely! If you have some good tips or ideas to solve the lack of motivation and discipline please feel free to share! 😃

Thank you for your answer!

Have a nice day and good productivity for your studies!

Peace!
