The Switch

avatar

Speaking of making changes the other day, I finally decided to move most of my web activity over to Brave. It took a while to get myself set up, but I did it in the end.

Some of you might think to yourselves why it took so long? The simple answer is laziness. Despite of all the supposed perks that come from the browser, there's no immediate danger. At least, not for most of your average internet user. It's the same with censorship resistance. Most people aren't worried about it since they aren't affected to a great extent.

But dang, there are a lot of settings. And you wonder why people don't want to switch over.

I do appreciate the built-in ad blocking. The sponsored ads themselves aren't too terrible either. They only show up as a small notification at the corner of my screen.

Sure, you get some BAT tokens as rewards, but they aren't anything substantial. I do want to point out that the ads I have seen seem to be somewhat related to my interests...if I cared. I'll let you know when they enticed me to a great product or service.

Speaking of which, I'm sure some of you have seen promoted tweets from DuckDuckGo on Twitter.

Google and Facebook know how to sell ads w/out damaging privacy... but they choose not to. Our Founder & CEO, @yegg, explains:https://t.co/Jy4JCp48gK

Yeah, I decided to add that to my Brave extensions because I thought, why not? The idea is that they won't profile you based on your search results. In essence, giving you a more objective look at what information is available.

Searched using DuckDuckGo

In a terrible analogy, I would compare it to an eclipse attack on a user of a network. When an entity has your profiles, it makes it possible to manipulate things around you. It can be strengthening a certain point of view or even bombarding you with the opposite. It makes it possible to convince someone of a world view that may or may not be accurate. That's an extreme case, but you get my point. I'm sure most people can't spot the difference. I can't.

What drawn me to use it had more to do with the headquarters of this company being closer to where I was from in Paoli, PA. Yeah, like I said before, most people aren't concerned with the whole privacy, etc. ordeal.

The main thing I have noticed from the switchover is that I have a smoother surfing experience. I do still use other browsers for my own purposes. I figured I'll keep using others to see if there are significant differences over time. I could already tell you that there are differences between Google and Bing searches.

Hey, still consider me inactive but I just lurk on the platform more often nowadays. I'm curious about how much this browser consumes memory. Have you tried opening a test page and compare results on task manager between browsers?

My laptop is old enough to have anxiety whenever update notifications come up. It's a constant switch between Chrome and FireFox whenever I'm planning to open a particular page. Chrome for Youtube or streaming. FireFox for general research that doesn't take a chunk of RAM. I can't run both at the same time with my potato laptop.

Some quick stats for ya.

This is from having the same tabs open.

Are the stats claimed by Brave worth it?

It remains to be seen.

Thanks for the info! I don't see any immediate need to change browsers at the moment. Most of my info online are stuff my national government already knows. They would be really committed to know more about me if they had info about the type of porn I watch. Shifting browsers would still be an option once I get better hardware.

As for posting more on Hive, still trying to get more feel for the changes. I saw some accounts get downvoted for simply using SBI? I already have a lot of those before I left. It won't surprise me if my first post in months would get downvoted to oblivion for a simple auto SBI upvote ._.

That should have stopped by now. Let me know if it becomes a problem.

Very interesting! I installed Brave quite some time ago, but I haven't really used it too much. I know they had some issues a short time ago, but I am assuming they got most of those ironed out. It seemed like a pretty decent browser when I used it.

I've switched between default browsers before Brave. Sometimes, one simply works better than the other through updates, etc.

I remember the times when Firefox was the go-to until it wasn't anymore.

I usually have both Firefox and Chrome open on my computer at any given time. I agree with you.

I’ve been using Brave as my main browser for quite a while now. I still use some extra privacy extensions such as Privacy Badger. It actually blocks some stuff that the built-in blocker misses. On other browsers I uses Https Everywhere, but it’s built-in to Brave, and that’s a good thing.

I like the Brave browser and DuckDuckGo too!

"The main thing I have noticed from the switchover is that I have a smoother surfing experience."

Only been using it for a month or two, but I can tell it's a faster browser. I like the idea of getting paid to view spam... adds. It's amazing how much more BAT you've accumulated in there. I just broke 1.30! I guess I should switch everything too.

The sponsored ads themselves aren't too terrible either. Agreed, almost refreshing in a strange way.

I haven't gone to Brave, but on the recommendation of @trumpman I've gone to DuckDuckGo. I like the privacy, a great deal. It's only been about a week, but I do notice that if I'm researching a science article, I get better results from a Google search. I'm not sure how that works, but a few times I've gone over to Google to look up something (mostly to get a citation) and then returned to DuckDuckGo when I found what I needed. For most things it doesn't matter, but if I want to find an obscure bit of information that I absolutely know is there (because I've found it before), it's easier to find on Google.

I would still use a mix of all the tools available.

Yeah for tough searches Google is still the best :(

I use Vivaldi. There you can set a search engine for normal mode and a search engine for private tabs. I set the default search engine in private mode to DuckDuckGo too. When I need to make research then Google is way better, but if I don't want to be tracked I use DuckDuckGo.

I personally don't like brave. The only thing that is good at Brave are the privacy settings. But then you could just use firefox or chromium with plugins like Ublock origin.

It's a good thing there are more options out there.

Yes. I don't care that much on privacy. Yes Privacy is nice, but I care more about features. That's why I use Vivaldi. It's a good compromise between features and privacy.
