Ley de Hess // Hess law ESP-ENG

avatar

The caloric effect of a reactive system depends only on the initial and final states, and is independent of the intermediates. This law allows us to calculate the thermal totality (heat released or absorbed) of certain reactions that, because they are not complete and stoichiometric (final products stopped and unique) cannot be found directly.

For Hess's law to be rigorously true, it is necessary that the processes take place at constant volume or pressure, in which case the heat released will correspond respectively to the decrease in internal energy or enthalpy, both state functions and therefore independent of the path followed.

C + 1/2O ↔ CO + Ꝋ

Applying Hess's law we first measure the total heat of combustion of Carbon.

C + O2 ↔ CO2 + 94 Kcal.

Then we burn pure CO, which is easily obtained by other methods.

The difference between the two previous reactions results.

C + 1/2O2 ↔ CO + 26,3 Kcal.

In other words, the heat released, which is impossible to measure directly, is known indirectly thanks to Hess's law. This is how the heat of formation of almost all organic substances is known, for example: sugars, fats, amino acids and more.
