In my previous posts, I shared :

Chapter 1 :

Chapter 2 :

In this post, I would like to share about '' The voice ''.

I'll translate it from French to English !

1. The voice :

1.1. : Presentation :

The voice is the collection of sounds produced by the larynx when exhaled air vibrates the vocal cords. Phonation is the set of phenomena involved in this sound production. Sounds can be used in a basic way or integrated into speech.

  1. La voix :

1.2. Voice characteristic:

The pitch of the voice during a conversation varies from person to person. Essentially determined by the length, shape and position of the vocal cords, it can be voluntarily modified, within certain limits, through the respiratory muscles and those of the larynx, by varying the air pressure, as well as the tension and position of the vocal cords (which may move away or come closer to each other). The combination of these elements determines the frequency of the vibration of the vocal cords: the higher the vibration, the higher the voice.

The timbre of the voice, the set of characteristics that makes it possible to differentiate a voice, comes in particular from the resonance in the chest, throat, oral cavity and nose. The intensity of the sounds is controlled by the strength of the vibrations, which depends on the rate with which the air is exhaled.

Articulation is the pronunciation of sounds by differentiating them to form words. Speech is articulated by interrupting and modulating the flow of air using the lips, tongue, teeth, jaw and palate.

2. Larynx :

Larynx, hollow organ in which the voice is produced, located in the anterior part of the neck, between the pharynx above and the trachea below, with which it is continuous.

Larynx :

2.1. Structure of the larynx :

In mammals, the larynx is found above the trachea, below the middle part of the pharynx, and in front of the lower part of the pharynx. The larynx is a superficial organ located under the skin and connective tissue of the throat. It is supported by ligaments inserted into the hyoid bone, a small horseshoe-shaped bone that is located under the base of the tongue.
The wall of the larynx consists of cartilages which serve as a framework, fibrous membranes, various muscles, as well as branches of blood vessels and nerve filaments.

2.2. Functioning of the larynx :

The larynx is part of the airways, which allow the exchange of air between the lungs and the outside. The cricoid cartilage, at its lower part, is the only rigid piece that is completely closed, including behind it. Ring-shaped, it therefore helps to maintain the opening of the larynx. Breathing is made easier by the fact that the vocal cords are separated from each other in their posterior part, which gives the glottis a triangle shape. The movements of the vocal cords are due to the movements of the arytenoid cartilages to which they attach at their posterior end.

The larynx shares with the tongue the function of preventing food or saliva from passing into the trachea during swallowing. The base of the tongue presses down and back on the epiglottis, until it closes the entrance to the larynx. At the same time, the whole larynx ascends towards the tongue, as can be seen at the level of Adam's apple, to complete this action. In addition, the vocal cords come together to close the middle part of the larynx, which provides additional protection for the airways.

And I'm finally done with the second chapter of my thesis.

I'm glad I shared most of my work on the blockchain !
