4th Attempt by Astra to finally reach Orbit [New Live: 20.11.21, 05:00 UTC]
EDIT 1: New Time: 6:20
EDIT 2: Attempt scrubbed after launch time was pushed a few times. New attempt 20.11.21, 05:00 UTC
We are coming off a long stretch of new launchers failing to reach orbit. Let's hope the fourth time is a charm.
First attempt:
Astra Rocket 3.1 Destroyed After Losing Control
Control systems couldn't keep oscillations in check and triggered an automatic abort.
Second attempt:
Failed to reach orbit because of a wrong fuel to oxidizer ratio on the second stage
Third attempt:
It was a spectacular loss and demonstrated excellent control of the vehicle. An early engine failure reduced their engines to 4 and lowered the thrust to weight ratio to almost 1. That made the rocket climb in slow motion and wasted too much fuel to reach orbit.
The rocket will launch out of Alaska and carry a test payload to LEO.
Astra is a small sat launch vehicle that can be deployed very quickly and transported to almost any place in the world in two shipping containers. That includes the rocket, ground equipment and launch pad.
