Can VR be used for meditation?

avatar

The role of technology in today's world is very vital. Virtual Reality is a technology that is still in its starting stage. There are already VR devices out in the market that has improved the gaming experience a lot. I'm hoping in the coming years it can slowly expand and even go towards Metaverse. But right now we are all looking for a proper application to accept Virtual reality. It is really interesting to understand that it helps in meditation and calming our minds.

Some yogic and meditation experts say that the surrounding in which we do Yoga plays a vital role to calm our mind. That is why it is recommended to pick a location that is calm and pleasant for meditation. But not all people can get a such a beautiful places. Sometimes it is even hard to focus on meditation if the surrounding is not good enough.

For a practiced human being, it usually takes 20 minutes to one hour to reach the meditation state. For others, this can even be hours to get focus and people might give up. If we are in a good environment this time can be reduced. Any natural environment is very good for meditation. People usually pick forests or beachside or a calm temple to do meditation. Not everyone can understand the significance of such things. Only a proper yogic practitioner will be able to experience this fruit.

Role of VR in meditation

Virtual reality plays a vital role in all these things. There are devices available now that can take us to places that we cannot visit otherwise. The experience of virtual reality is definitely mind-blowing. Some people think this technology is not mature enough. Though it is certainly true there are some applications already for Virtual Reality and meditation is one good use case.

People can use VR to calm their minds first by visiting some beautiful virtual place filled with lots of greenery or someplace that would be soothing for the mind. After having a visit to such virtual places, if we try to meditate, we will be able to reach the meditation state really soon. There are different types of meditation that can be done with VR and there is always room for exploration.

Mind is important

The mind plays an important role when it comes to meditation. Acceptance is created by the brain and that goes with the flow. These computer-generated environments may not be real but our mind thinks that are real and helps in calm down. This is where VR and our mind collaborate and gives a pleasant experience. For people with mental issues, this has been great therapy. People visit some exciting places with VR to calm their minds and have anxiety issues under control.

Meditation can be the next bigger step but it all starts with preparing the mind and to prepare the mind VR is of great help. People not only use visualization to calm their minds but also sounds play an important role. When people are having panic attacks or anxiety issues, if they are taken to a calm environment with the help of VR, they tend to feel secure and their anxiety is under control. It is very important to always make our mind feel that it is in a safe and secure environment. If we don't do that, the mind will affect the body and it will start triggering all sorts of health issues.

Meditation in a VR environment is definitely possible. Though, nothing beats the real environment, I believe this is very valuable alternative in location such as cities where nature is not easily accessible.

Yes definitely. This will also be a good option for people who cannot move out of their house.

This would be great, especially for people who live in noisy places and where meditation is difficult.

The role of virtual reality in the field of meditation is interesting. I tried a virtual reality system a month ago and was amazed

I definitely like the concept, and I think it will be of even greater benefit when these headsets are less bulky and more like glasses. As of today, it feels like a console on top of your head spewing EMFs so I’m not sure the pros outweigh the cons just yet. If I remember correctly my oculus even suggests not having it on for more than 30min at a time for health reasons.
Say all that to say, I love the idea and it’s one of those things that will get better w/ time

Indeed @bala41288 VR (Virtual Reality) plays a big role on medical treatments and understanding. As it is a technology used in simulating reality and lots of things than be done and learnt with it.

In this modern era where technology as greatly improved how we live and do things on every sectors which also includes the medical sector.

I read somewhere though that the use of vr for environmental needs and triggers could result in sensory overload so I'm still iffy on the use of vr. Maybe they should put more study into this to see if it doesn't flip off some brain and sensory regulatory function

I don't meditate, but I have used it in the past and I have a technique similar to meditation to help me sleep when I cannot quite my brain.

That being said, I think a big part of meditation is eliminating stimulations and not adding them, so I wouldn't suppect it wouldn't be a good tool for meditation.

Agree with you on that. You are lucky, you have your methods to calm your mind to sleep. I found some tricks for myself too after I suffered from sleep disorders last year. Gadgets like these are not good but maybe suitable for people who cannot calm down naturally and their environment is not suitable.

It’s pretty simple.

Picture a white wall with no details in the distance. You don’t want to really see it just know it is there.

Everytime you think of something that distracts you, refocus on the wall, not directly but just make yourself aware of it.

The important thing is not to see details that will distract you.

I don’t need to use it often anymore but for a while it was the only way I could fall asleep.
