SSD or HDD .. Which one is Good to Buy

avatar

I have been thinking to buy a hard drive for almost one year but could not buy one until now and it's because I did not have the need for a drive. My laptop has got 500 GB of space which was good enough for me until now but I feel that I should have an external hard drive so that I can keep my data safe in the drive. although laptop storage is not bad at all I believe having an external drive is a good idea because with this drive I need not worry about the crash of the laptop. last week my office laptop got crashed all of sudden and it was replaced because there was no way to repair the laptop and bring it back in running state.

it was working fine until Thursday and Friday was the day when it went off all of sudden. I had all the data saved in cloud storage and that help me e a lot because I did not lose any data. these days data is very important and priceless so losing any part of data can create a lot of problems and that is why I prefer to save all my data in the cloud space provided by my organization. Since the cloud storage is provided by the organization which is anyways a good idea but I believe for my personal use spending to big an amount on cloud storage might be an expensive game. I did a comparison between going for cloud storage or a hard drive then I realise a hard drive is a better idea because there will be no subscription at all whereas with cloud storage I will have to pay recurring charges based on my subscription. although cloud storage will provide me the functionality to access the data from anywhere the kind of data I will be storing is not that much need to be mobile so I will be preparing to go for an external hard drive as of now.

Now there is another question because buying a hard drive is not so simple and now we have to varieties in external hard drive. Now there are two options in an external hard drive which are known as SSD or HDD? SSD is known as solid-state drive and HDD is known as Hard disk drive. Obviously, there are many differences in terms of Technology so I did research on what type of external drives. prior to this research I was not aware of it but now I got to know and based on the requirement, we can go for the one which fits best as per the usage.

What is HDD-

HDD is based on the old technology that has been in use for many more years and it's the first-ever technology that has been in use since long. we can say that it's based on older Technology and having some moving parts inside the drive. it's cheap in price but obviously not too fast as compared to other one but if you are going only for the storage then can be a good option to go far.

A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive, or fixed disk is an electromechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage and one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material. ... Modern HDDs are typically in the form of a small rectangular box.

What is SDD

SSD is built with the latest technology and works much faster than HDD however it's quite expensive. Probably the amount needs to spend for one terabyte of SSD will bring approximately 4 to 5 TB stories in HDD. So yes there is quite a big difference in price but with this drive, we get a faster speed and if we need to work on applications through the dry then it is a great idea and one must go for SSD only.

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a new generation of storage devices used in computers. SSDs use flash-based memory, which is much faster than a traditional mechanical hard disk. Upgrading to an SSD is one of the best ways to speed up your computer.

I used to think that I can buy a drive just like another electronic gadget I buy but looks like things are not so easy E and I am still in research mode to see what are the best options available for me at the lower price but with the latest technology and better durability. I am not in hurry to buy but I want to make sure that when I buy then it should be e the best product available in my budget and I can use it for many more years without worrying about its life and speed ofcourse.

I am going through some videos and articles these days and am still in research mode so once I am done with it then will share the update here about the one which I will continue for my purchase. Certainly, I will prefer to go for the brand because with branded products we can expect better support and I am ok to pay slide higher prices as well because for me long-lasting component is also important. If you like to share any tricks or suggestions then please as it might help me to make the right choice.

Thank you so much.

Good post. SSD is much better than HDD .
SDD is faster

Welcome its my pleasure. But you should know the major disadvantage as well.
The inability to recover old data is one of the biggest disadvantages of a SSD

I have a 10 year old laptop with a SSD drive and a 1 year old laptop with normal HDD, and to be honest, I prefer the ten year old laptop... Feels way faster and better, simply because of the SDD (even though the specs are terrible in general). So, I would much rather have a small storage with great speed, than a HDD that makes the computer incredibly slow!

Thanks for sharing the experience and yes you are right that having a faster drive with less storage is better than more storage with low speed. I will surely consider it.

To be honest, an SSD is really better but really expensive. So what I did with my old computer was to get a 256 gig SSD and installed my OS there and all my other files are in the HDD.

After testing out an SSD I really don't want to go back into using a HDD. You'll feel the difference when you start and restart your pc/laptop.

Anyway, I hope that you'll be able to make the right choice. Have fun researching!

Looks like you are happier with SSD than HDD and I also need speed because its much needed. Thanks for sharing the experience. appreciate it

Yup, I am really happy. The speed difference place a really great role. No regrets hehe. You're welcome. Hope that this was able to help you purchase the storage that you need

The factors that come into this most are cost. The costs of SSD are higher than HDD but if you are able to swing it, an SSD is a very reliable and good option to have. HDD aren’t bad per-se but they aren’t as fast that’s for sure. Then there’s the issue of having the drive get corrupted if you drop it. Lots of things involved!

having the drive get corrupted if you drop it

is this problem only with HDD or both?

Only with HDD in my experience. Cell phones have SSD drives in them and we drop them all the time. Drop a hard drive a few times and it will stop working lol

Hi @alokkumar121 no doubt you have to go with technology and an SSD for its features would be a good choice. Particularly, I work with SSD. Time goes by and storage technology is breaking new ground. See you later.
