There are still many things we don't know about the animal world of millions of years ago. It is often thought that at the time of the dinosaurs, the only large herbivorous animals that existed were long-necked dinosaurs, Triceraptos, Ankylosaurs and similar herbivores. At least that's how scientists thought, until the remains of Lisowicia Bojani were discovered in 2008, being in 2018 when its genus and species were officially formalized.

This animal was a synapsid dicynodont (extinct group of four-legged herbivores), with some relationship to today's mammals. Also badly called "mammal-like retiles", the large proto-mammals were thought to be extinct at the beginning of the dinosaur era. The Lisowicia Bojani fossils date from the late Triassic, by which time large herbivorous dinosaurs were already walking on earth. Its size was similar to that of a modern elephant.

It is believed to have weighed between 5 and 6 tons, and was the largest dicynodont known to date, at 4.5 meters long and 2.6 meters high. It is also believed to be the last surviving dicynodont, becoming extinct at the end of the Triassic period. Due to its vertical limbs, it is believed that it may have walked in a similar way to some current herbivorous mammals, as well as being adapted to support enormous weight, as is the case with dinosaurs and large mammals.

This changes our view about life in the dinosaur era (Mesozoic Era), where other large animals may have existed alongside dinosaurs. The herbivorous dinosaurs that could have competed with Lisowicia are the early Sauropods, which would later become the giant long-necked dinosaurs in subsequent eras, such as Diplodocus or Brachiosaurus.

According to the area of its discovery, it is believed that Lisowicia had a top predator. We are talking about the Triassic period, Tyrannosaurs, Giganotosaurs, Allosaurs, Megalosaurs, etc. did not exist yet. According to what is known, its main predator is not even a dinosaur, it is the Smok, an archosaur (relative to crocodiles), which is the one seen in the image above (a). Its large size could have been an important advantage against predators, however, it disappeared at the end of the Triassic.
