You know that short story "The Egg" by Andy Weir? Well, ChatGPT made a spinoff...

You know the one. A man dies in a car accident and finds himself in the "afterlife" talking to God, and they go on a little stroll talking about life, death, reincarnation, and how the man who died is, well....everyone. All told from the perspective of what we might call "God".

“The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.” “You mean mankind? You want us to mature?” “No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.” “Just me? What about everyone else?” “There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.” You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…” “All you. Different incarnations of you.” “Wait. I’m everyone!?"

Yeah, that story. Well, I fed the entire thing to ChatGPT in an attempt to get a shot list so I could maybe film it. Instead, what I got was an entire storyline based on one simple line in the original story. This is that line:

“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?” “Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”

For some reason, ChatGPT latched onto that part about the Chinese peasant girl and cranked out this story in all of 3 minutes: ___________________________________________________________________

As the credits roll, we see a montage of scenes from the protagonist's past lives, each one giving us a glimpse into a different time and place. In one life, they are a warrior on a battlefield, in another they are a scholar in ancient Greece. Finally, the montage comes to an end and we see the protagonist as a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD, the life they are about to be reborn into. The scene opens on a bustling marketplace, with people going about their daily lives. We see the protagonist, a young girl, working at a small stall selling trinkets. She looks up as a group of people pass by, her eyes full of curiosity and wonder. Suddenly, there is a commotion and the girl looks over to see a carriage approaching, surrounded by guards. She recognizes the man inside as the local governor, and watches as he passes by, her eyes following him until he disappears from sight. The girl turns back to her stall and continues working, unaware of the fact that her life is about to change forever. We see the girl a few days later, walking along a dusty road. She is on her way to the governor's palace, having been summoned by the governor himself. She is nervous and unsure of what to expect, but she knows that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As she approaches the palace, she is stopped by the guards and asked for her name. She tells them, and they let her pass, leading her inside. The governor's throne room is grand and opulent, with tapestries and fine furniture everywhere. The girl is awestruck by the splendor of it all. The governor sits on his throne, looking down at the girl. He tells her that he has chosen her to be his concubine, and that she will live in the palace and serve him. The girl is shocked and confused, but she knows that she has no choice but to accept. She nods her head in agreement, and the governor tells her that she will begin her duties immediately. We see the girl being taken to her new quarters, where she is given fine clothes and taught how to behave in the palace. She quickly adapts to her new life, and before long she is one of the governor's favorite concubines. But despite her newfound wealth and status, the girl is unhappy. She misses her family and her old life, and she longs for the freedom she once had. One day, she is approached by a group of rebels who are fighting against the governor's rule. They tell her that they need her help, and that she can make a difference. The girl is hesitant at first, but she knows that she can't continue living the life of a concubine forever. She agrees to help the rebels, and soon she is involved in a dangerous and secretive underground movement. As the rebellion grows, the girl becomes more and more involved, risking her life for the cause. She is eventually captured by the governor's men and brought before the governor himself. The governor is furious, and tells the girl that she will be executed for her crimes. But before he can carry out his sentence, the rebels launch a surprise attack on the palace. In the chaos that ensues, the girl manages to escape and joins the rebels in their fight against the governor. She proves to be a valuable asset, and she quickly rises through the ranks of the rebellion. As the years pass, the girl becomes a fierce and respected leader, known for her bravery and cunning. She leads the rebels to many victories, and eventually they are able to overthrow the governor and take control of the kingdom. The girl is hailed as a hero, and she is given a place of honor in the new government. She is content with her life and the knowledge that she has made a difference in the world. But even as she enjoys her newfound freedom and power, she knows that she will eventually have to face the cycle of death and rebirth once again. She accepts her fate with grace and dignity, knowing that she will continue to make a difference in the lives of those she is reborn into. The screen fades to black as the girl's story comes to an end, and we are left to ponder the mysteries of life and death.
