Teaching As A Talent (TaaT)

avatar

As a human being born into this world, there are precise characteristics you embody biologically and mostly physically too. These are the ones that would most likely not take long before you manifest all but there exist some features that take time before you as an individual notice them. They may not be revealed or noticed as early as the conventional biological characteristics. These “other” abilities are referred to as Talents. However, some talents are discovered in a certain enabling environment while others could just be naturally. For example, in the case of the latter, a drummer becomes that when a drum is available while a teaching talent does not necessarily have to exist within the four walls of a class although there have to be those who would be taught.

Let’s not wander too far from the scope of the topic...

For me, I will say my talent is teaching. Yes, you can call me a teacher. Thank you! Well, for someone who comes from a nuclear family whose parents have had something to do with teaching both as a job and volunteering at some point in their lives; I guess I can call it hereditary. My dad was once employed as a secondary school teacher just after he graduated from secondary school – when Nigeria was Nigeria. My mother studied a primary education course and taught for many years too.

Besides, growing up, my father was also his children’s Mathematics teacher at home. He teaches us other subjects too but maths was his strong core. But somehow, I enjoyed teaching the most. Perhaps that was because of the age gap between me and my siblings. From the teaching I got from my dad, I was usually ahead of my peers in school, especially in Mathematics. So, most times when my peers seem not to understand some topics that had been taught in class, I volunteer to teach them. Even I, humbly, do correct the teacher’s mistakes at times. Then, I do not do this every time because my mother taught me that sometimes you have to be low-key- humble. I actually started doing this when I came of age when I could really identify my right from my left. That was approximately when I was around eight years old.

How Far?

Moreover, I am a testament to the fact that when you teach others what you know, you know it better with time. I did quite more in secondary school than I did in primary school. Fast forward to the university, at first, I was one of those naïve students who just wants to be in, get good grades and be out of school without any soul knowing.

But at a point at the end of my first year, I decided I do not want that kind of university life. I have got to make my mark somehow. Mind you, I only wanted to be actively involved in things. It was when our final results in the 1st year came in and I sent mine to the academic coordinator of my fellowship that he spoke to me about teaching. He remarked that my results were good and he would love me to be a tutor in his tutorial academy. Well, as if he spoke my love language, I jumped on the opportunity and I have been doing that for about 2 years now.

Sometime last year, I felt I could start up my own tutorial but sadly it didn’t work out. I had to call it off myself due to the fact that I had some other things I was involved in. And so that the other aspects of my being won’t suffer because anything administration is not easy. So instead of the tutorial, I will focus on taking people through the rudiments of applying for scholarships. Maybe, in the long run, we could add international scholarships too. I am still teaching in a way. Right?

Still Far A Journey

Furthermore, I have other plans in my little brain. I believe that the education sector in my country and life generally has to undergo advancements to tally with what life is like at present. And teachers are grossly under-rewarded in today’s system. So, I am definitely venturing into the education sector to change things for the better both students and teachers-wise. But not now. In the nearest future, it is.

The good thing about having talent for teaching is that it makes it possible for you to easily difficult challenges that comes with teaching and you can make cool rewards via the teaching talent..

Exactly... At times, you may meet someone who knows what you don't know in another field of study. Since teaching already set a form of networking, the connection flows easily. Hence, information is shared.

This is really an extraordinary talent because not everyone can teach, And so far I myself have no talent in teaching and you have it 😁👍

Thank you very much, @theycallmewell. But come to think of it, teaching does not only imply academic, teaching someone how to set up cooking utensils make you a teacher already. 🤔

Teaching is indeed a talent, I have teaching who taught like they were the founders of those formulas. Having teaching as a talent makes you teach extraordinarily, I taught as well and I enjoyed it a lot.

It is a natural thing for me, my colleague do wonder how I build good relationships with my students that aids easy assimilation.

Very well, I sincerely admire and pray for those teachers who took their job keenly and not like just another money for work thingy. You teach too, I therefore salute Thy grace.🙌🙇

I am a testament to the fact that when you teach others what you know, you know it better with time.

I do agree with this and I can feel the changes you wish to bring into the world. It is lovely to find someone who truly loves teaching regardless of how badly teachers are treated.

Well, you know, we can not all run away from germane things in the society. If we all do, perhaps society won't exist anymore.
Thank you!

I admired and respect teachers for taking the great impact on our lives even when mostly underpaid.

I wish you well in your teaching dream, that change you speak of is much needed in our system.

For your scholarship coaching, I have a younger brother who is just out of secondary school I might be reaching out to you on his behalf if you don't mind please 🙏

No problem, you can send him in.
Although what I do is not really scholarship coaching like that, what I do is send updates, put them through registrations, send past questions if I have them... Etc. But who knows? The ministry might grow bigger tomorrow 😁

Teaching is a gift that is very rare. So Talents can be inherited? I am sure your dad is very proud of you.

Mathematics is one one subject I find very difficult through out my school days. I don't know probably it was the kind of teachers I had that made it so. I have seen gifted teachers before, they don't only make teaching fun,but they add beauty to education.

Though talents are inbuilt, sometimes they need to be triggered by an external forces. Thank God your dad was always there to teach you. All this while mathematics was in you but it needs to be coached by someone. Some people have not really benefited and enjoyed their Talents because they had not come across anyone or circumstance that could hone the gift in them.

I love teaching too, but it is not a gift in my own case, it just something I do out of passion. I pray you greater heights in your teaching journey.🥰

Well, I think my parents had a hand in my talenthood, even though there isn't scientific claim to that. And maths was my best subject unavoidably.😅

It's true some talent may have to be forced out else generations may suffer... 😀

Thank God you discovered your talent sir, with the looks on your face I know any student that passes through you hands would not have difficulty with mathematics like me here 🤗. Please build them well, I feel bad most times we I encounter problems in mathematics that I love to solve but I really cant., It's hurtful.

All credit goes to your parents, they really played their parts well. And make sure you always appreciate them for that, both word and material wise😁

well, God will continue to help us.. Even with the little knowledge we have in maths, I can relate to that feeling when one can't solve a maths question you'd like to.
I will always appreciate them, thank you very much, bro.

Amen sir.

Even with the little knowledge we have in maths, I can relate to that feeling when one can't solve a maths question you'd like to.

That feeling is not always nice o, I almost hated maths at some point because of that.

You are always welcome boss.. your boy is learning 😁

It is really not nice, actually s lot of that happened during this recent ASUU strike. My sister has lots of maths work for me but I could only solve a few. Me a whole best student in maths in secondary school then. .. It's painful 😢

Hmmm!!! 😁😁😁, You only need to warm yourself up again. The mathematics is still there intact. My maths teacher then would always tell us that math is like money, when you stop chasing it, you stop having it. It needs consistent practice. So go back to you closet and get the needful done. Don't blame ASSU abeg😅

Being a teacher, should be what everyone want because teaching someone makes you know better. And also, everyone should learn how to teach for the purpose of becoming a parent someday, as family is the first agent of socialisation.

I mentioned something like this above. I said that teaching is not only in academics, we have them in business, crypto, writing etc. And most especially parenting!!

Thank you for your input.

Teaching is a very rare and special talent; not everyone can do the job perfectly.

My economics teacher in secondary school who happened to be the best teacher I’ve ever seen. Why? Because she teaches well. She brings herself down to every student’s understanding.

It is nice that teaching is your talent.

Thanks for sharing.

Honestly, I envy all of you who have teaching as a talent. Because I don't have that kind of patience. I'm probably the kind of teacher that if you don't understand and I'm tired of explaining I'll give you as homework.😂 It's not me you'll stress😋

You are doing great indeed. All of you, your rewards are in heaven.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Oh, I get that kind of thing. 😅 Well, that happens sometimes too but as a teacher the goal is for your student to understand. That is why most lecturers in tertiary institutions fail in that aspect - many of their students don't even understand what is being taught.

Thank you very much, @bruno-kema
