MEASURING ONE'S INTELLIGENCE

I remember when my father was always reminding my twin brother and I that taking first and second positions respectively in our class every term does not necessarily mean that we are the most intelligent ones in our class. He usually makes this statement each time we present our results to him at the end of the term. Most times, I felt so bad about it, instead of congratulating us in peace, he will be painting a scenario of applying what we are being taught in school to our daily life activities to show that we are smart and not only showing grades. Note: he so much valued education while he was still alive, he sacrificed a lot just to pay school fees because of how important he felt education is to everyone's life but yet, what he values most is practical life; applying wisdom in handling issues around you, problem-solving, etc. Perhaps, I didn't understand him very well then but as I grew older, I did.

So reacting to this week's question about going to school and getting good grades, a measure of one's intelligence? I will say NO; we don't need to go to school to be intelligent!

I can't dispute the fact that Education has played a significant role in the growth of our society at large. A lot of growth/development we experience today in both social, economic, etc, majorly came through education. However, I certainly don't believe that one's good grades are a measure of intelligence. Take, for instance, some students who involve in cramming work, examination malpractice, or even bribing lecturers or teachers, they may end up having good grades.

They may even get awards for standing out but they can't justify the result even in their practical life activities. I have seen graduates who cannot apply little knowledge in certain problem-solving yet, they graduated with flying colors. I have also seen people who have never seen the four walls of the school, yet they apply knowledge in handling their businesses and achieve a good results. I have also heard of notable men in our society who dropped out of school and still invented one thing or the other.

Being intelligent is your ability to apply knowledge to your daily activities. We all are endowed with intelligence but to sharpen it, more commitment is required. Education helps us build intelligence within us but is not a measure of one's intelligence. An uneducated person can be regarded as an intelligent being, once he or she can apply knowledge to anything and achieve results.

Finally, I will say that intelligence depends on how you put your knowledge to use, not necessarily on obtaining good grades in school.

This is my response to the #hivelearners community contest on the topic titled INTELLIGENCE.

You have nailed it again
Bravo 👏👏👏 to this brilliant answer you have given to us. Indeed being educated is not a measure of intelligence but it's how you put your knowledge into use.

I agree with this, not all who call themselves graduates think like one. The ability to be able to think and solve problems our way tells a lot about how knowledgeable we are. An interesting piece.👏

It's actually True, because I have heard of cases where even head mistress could not read, coppers who couldn't spell their names complete but these set of person's came out with outstanding results so I'll strongly agree with your view

If school was the deal, we wouldn't even see those IGBO men owning massive warehouses today (most of them didn't step foot on four walls, but their knowledge and intelligence is beyond compare)... Thanks for sharing , sorry about your lost also
