Between belief and consequence [EN/PT]

Prevention is better than cure. A popular phrase I’ve heard since childhood and often used in contexts that aren’t exactly about health. It speaks about how we can avoid problems. But considering that prevention is a necessary action in healthcare to avoid diseases and illnesses, many times certain beliefs and the refusal of parents to vaccinate their children are seen not only as an isolated issue, but as something that can affect other people and even society. How do we deal with these situations?

It is something delicate when we are talking about refusal of vaccines or other medical procedures. There are two sides to it, empathy is necessary, even when we know that decisions based on belief can be associated with ignorance or fanaticism. We need to understand that procedures like these can shake people’s beliefs, but it is something so delicate that there are extreme situations where decisions need to be made. A wrong decision leads to bad consequences and many times it does not affect only the one who refuses.

Once I heard about a person who went through an extreme situation because of their beliefs, they were not close to me, just an acquaintance of a friend. He told me that this person had suffered an accident and needed a blood transfusion, but the family did not allow the procedure because of their religious beliefs and the person passed away. I keep thinking about how the relatives dealt with this, because the death was a consequence of someone’s decision, a death that could have been avoided. But I also think that if the person had survived, how would they deal with the fact that a procedure was performed that goes against their religious doctrine.

It is truly something very delicate and complex. How far can interference go to the point of not harming other people? Prevention is the best solution, but what about when someone simply refuses a vaccine, for example? Here in Brazil, during the pandemic, many people refused to take the vaccine because of fake news. It was not necessarily based on a religious belief, but on a belief imposed due to political conflicts. So even in this we can see that there is a correlation, whether religious or not, but connected to what people believe and, in that moment, it may have been one of the most necessary times for prevention against something that was killing thousands of people. How many people did this refusal kill directly or indirectly?

So, even though I think what people believe should be respected, this needs to be analyzed carefully, because from the moment that decision affects other people, it should not be made by third parties, but guided by a collective sense of preserving others. If a decision is made for oneself, without external consequences, so be it. But there are limits that a decision cannot cross and that limit is when it brings consequences to other people.

In the end, maybe the point is not to choose between respecting or intervening, but to understand the weight of each decision within the context in which it exists. Individual freedom is important, but it stops being only individual when it starts to impact other lives. And it is at this limit, often invisible, that responsibility needs to speak louder than belief. Decisions are not yours when they negatively impact other people’s lives.

I am re-blogging this @michupa

Prevention is better than cure, and you nailed the core tension at the end: individual freedom stops being purely individual the moment it harms others.

Whether it's refusing a blood transfusion due to religious beliefs or rejecting vaccines because of misinformation or politics, the consequences often spill over, outbreaks, preventable deaths, and strained healthcare systems.
Beliefs deserve empathy and respect, but when they create clear, foreseeable harm to children or the wider community, responsibility must outweigh personal conviction. Education first, but society has a legitimate role in protecting the vulnerable through targeted measures when voluntary prevention fails.

Many lives have been lost unnecessarily because ideology trumped evidence. Your closing point is spot on: decisions are not truly yours when they negatively impact other people’s lives.

Thanks for this, such an important post and it is still happening as we speak.

Yeah. Blood transfusion! I have also seen some people also do that here. Saying their beliefs did not permit them do blood transfusion. Some people have died as a result. God will help us.
Thanks for sharing
