From the series What if...the Paraguay War hadn't existed.
Historical events are often unfair, and many of these events led Brazil to the pit that they are right now. Most of the times people brag about their country's history being proud of the nation that they come from. In my understanding, you can be proud of your origins and culture. But we need to be frank that many events just ruined the country and made it to be where they are right now. Brazil is a country with beautiful nature and despite of the corruption in the politicians, the people has a warm heart. What are the historical events that I would interfere with in the past that could change a bit the current present of the country?
Many important events are the cause of our current position considered as a country in development and that always depended on commodities. The colonization of the country like all the other countries of Latin America was different from Canada/USA. The Europeans came to the country to exploit nature instead of trying to build their new home. At least most of them! Portugal colonized us and they just wanted to extract the natural products from their country, they never intended to create a new home in our country. The country's future could be different if the Dutch or French invasions had different results. Both invasions had a goal that differed a bit from the Portuguese people, they had more of a focus on permanent residency for the immigrants coming from Europe, especially the France Antarctique which was temptive of colonization in Rio de Janeiro that brought protestants from France that wanted to find a new home, but the Portuguese just expelled them from the country.
Some big revolutions were oppressed by the dominant rulers of the country like the "Canudos War". Canudos was a community created by Antonio Conselheiro and was focused on better social distribution and against the abuse of the elites in the early period of the country as a republic. The government sent the army to destroy the community since they tagged them as a community that wanted back the monarchy to the country, which wasn't the truth. The real truth is that they were refusing to pay taxes to the country and also becoming popular in bringing poor people and slaves to this new community that was growing a lot. Other interesting events were highly oppressed, but still, it isn't the event that I would change.
In my head, the event that was an important mark not only for Brazil but for all of South America was the Paraguay War. One thing that I always hated is that countries like us always were a puppets of the great powers of the world. England was the great power at the end of the XIX century and it was the one behind this conflict since it had commercial interests in the region and Paraguay was growing as a regional power, technology leader and also in trading. However, Paraguay had a protection policy with their products. So England "recommended" with financial goodies to Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil to invade Paraguay. Of course, Paraguay wasn't a totally good country since they wanted to expand a bit their territory.
But if I could convince the king of Brazil at that time, Dom Pedro II (yeah we were a monarchy once) to not participate in that war. It could save Brazil from losing money and people in this war in the name of the others. The only bad thing is that probably the king would stay a bit more after since that war was one of the excuses that the country's elite decided that we needed to change to a republic. But it would be interesting to see Paraguay to continue to grow independent of any other European nation. After this conflict Paraguay went to a hole that is still there, they lost their economy, territory, and human souls.
That conflict helped a lot for South American countries to continue in their route of big economic dependency on the great powers of the world that lasted until now. Nowadays Brazil is considered a big regional power, but it is just a mask. The truth is that if the conflict didn't exist, probably we would have a real regional power independent from European or North American power. It is something that I would love to see the consequences.

Acabei me enrolando e dei algumas voltas.

Preventing a war is always sound so peaceful, but if there wasn't any war that time, would the problem be gone? Would the tension just puffed gone like that?
It's not I support war and invasion, it's just I believe world is not as simple like that. What if Europe never did any colonization? Maybe they kill each other there
History was written by the victors, we never really know what happen back then
For sure we can try to predict but is difficult
I wish you can go back to the past and prevent the historic event but we all know it's impossible as we can't go back.
The king of Brazil wouldn't have listened to you because people tend to learn from experience rather than advice. I hope he has learned one or 2 from the war

No doubt, we can be proud of our dearly beloved country but there are certain things that happened that only spoilt the country.a

Old Dom Pedro II was the last king down there is I recall. It was kind of odd that there was a monarchy at all as most of South America went with presidents (dictators in reality.) Funny how one war changes everything, having seen wars first hand they shouldn't exist at all in my opinion!
The royal family still gets some benefits in Brazil hehehe , at least their descendants!
