Is education a scam?

This can act as a sort of sequel to one of my previous posts which was School Na Scam.

First off, I will begin this post by saying I am a Nigerian, born and brought up. I am also schooling in Nigeria. And I can tell you this for free that schools in my dear country will frustrate your life. You might argue that it is the same in other countries, and you probably are right. The thing is that in my country, it is mostly tough because people just choose not to do what they are meant to do.

One of the bane of every student is strike, I do not think there will be a student that will complete an entire course in the higher institution without the board of lecturers going on one strike or the other. Then there is the academic part, where we are taught obsolete topics that are not really important in day to day living. Even in the very profession you are studying. You will be overloaded with assignments, projects, tests and whatnot, everyone will be giving insane deadlines and failure to submit even one could tell negatively on your result.

But then, education is not a scam.

We see the reasons all over the place, it surrounds us and denying that fact is just we deceiving ourselves. It is possible to go through the school and not learn anything academically, but you will surely be educated. Education does not just involve academics, it can also happen outside the walls of a classroom.

In our world today, those with the highest degrees are working for those without a single degree. Will you say that it is because one is more educated than the other? No! Both are educated, but in entirely different fields.

While a lawyer might have been going to the university studying law, moving on to law school, and then furthering his studies to become a juggernaut in the legal space, his prospective client that would be able to afford him would probably be attending business classes and figuring out ways to make money in bucketful so that in the event any legal issue rises, he will have enough money to hire the best lawyers.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

In universities today, more than fifty percent of the students earn a living. Some get jobs and others open up businesses. These are decisions they come to on their own, when they realize that it is something they have to do if they are going to survive. If you have no prior business sense, you would learn. And if you make a mistake, you would rise up and try again because you have no choice. That is just the truth of the matter.

In academics, we learn new topics that were discovered decades ago, based on a scheme that was also compiled decades ago, and then we write exams that does not really test our intelligence, but our memory. As if this is not enough, we also have to face extortion, compete with coursemates who are willing to pay or sleep for grades, lecturers who are just naturally wicked and love to torture innocent students.

And still, we always make it work. Many of us come out in flying colors, it is never easy but we get the job done.

But at that moment when it’s all done, we have not just learned academics. We have also learned more about ourselves and the path we are choosing to go in this life. Many people get into school and discover they have a penchant for politics, or they want to become great artists, or in my case, make money off their writing gift.

The school tosses you into a mix of people from different backgrounds, religion, tribe, and then you have to figure out a way to cope with it all and still come out on top. Life happens to you while in school, over and over again, you discover just how much you can get hit and you will always get back up. And by the time you are done, you would not be the same person that went into the school in the first place.

School can never be a scam for me, because the things I have learned there are enough to set me for life. It was in school I learned how to work under pressure. When you have an important exam the next day, but also have to submit two different assignments and a project as well that same day, and you are yet to start any or read for the exam. Then you will truly know what working under pressure is, we eat it for lunch and dinner.

It was also in school that I truly understood that problems never really finish, there can be breaks in between, but they will always keep on coming because it is the only way we grow. And the more we solve them, the better we get. That is why I try my best to enjoy myself whenever I can, and I try to have as little regrets as possible.

So far, I have only zero regrets.

In my opinion, the school is the best place to discover yourself. Because there you will be with people in similar situation as you are and you will get to make genuine friends who will walk with you on the path. I know that there are still things that can be done, it is nothing the government can’t do. They know what the problem is, they don’t just want to spend money.

But I would love it if the school keeps on remaining a place where people become better versions of themselves. Although without too much frustration. Hehe…

Smiles...I can relate to this statement but then we just have to cram or struggle to pass the topic/courses anyhow to keep moving forward 🤩.

However, education is the starting point of so many things in our lives. It's the basis and the rock on which we stand to shine and fit in well with our civilized society today.

Thanks for sharing your view with us👍

Yeah...
Education makes for life as we know it. And while we do not necessarily make use of the academics, we make use of the other aspects taught to us.
Thank you for reading.

😂. You're right, schools in Nigeria will frustrate you and sometimes make you doubt the necessity of education. It's the perseverance that makes all the difference.

Na here the matter dey on.
People are probably misconstruing what education really is for. Its for formal equality. What places men above each other is their mind, and use of talents, not their first class.

It us indeed the mind, and how you use the resources around you. School will only get you so far.

School can never be a scam for me, because the things I have learned there are enough to set me for life.

School is not a scam for you. I have agreed with you.

Questions?
A. Why do we still have an old school curriculum today contending our grandfather's teaching.

B. And, why are our students frustrated in this present system of education?

Ahh...
Your questions are based on the academic aspects of schooling.
In my post I talked majorly about the life lessons school taught me. Your questions tackle issues that can easily be taken care of by the system, but they just choose not to.
But that does not make it scam, because it is still responsible for grooming a lot of us.
Thank you for reading.

Working under pressure is certainly a thing that we learn at schools. Schooling lifts procrastination out of us if we really wanna do something about our academics.

The elementary education is of immense importance in making us move forward with the on going moderation even if it is taught with obsolete concepts. Hehe

Yeah...
If you don't learn how to work under pressure in school, then I have no idea where you would learn it.

Well said boss.. all point were just on point.
We need to know that school is not a place that guarantees job.

We go to school to learn and acquire knowledge but if your certificate could fetch you a good job, good for you and if not, it does not mean education is a scam. You just have to know your way.

Indeed.
When you know your way, whatever situation you find yourself in you would be able to make things work in your favor.
