Existentialism - POBlosophy // Existencialismo - POBlosofia

Taking advantage of what they call "Yellow September" here in Brazil, and I'm in a very complicated situation mentally because a very close friend decided to try to end his life (without success) and is now intubated in the hospital, I'm going talk about the philosophical line that I like the most and at the same time it's the one I consider riskier, heavier and more intense. Existentialism. What is the relationship with suicide? Actually none directly, but many philosophers of many times have dealt with this theme, and it was no different for existentialists, I will be clearer about this later on. But before taking a tour of the history of this line of mental research, let me give an overview of my own view of the topic.

Source

Existentialism is accepting that, however full of references, models, wiles, tools, frames, fables, crutches and expectations, deep down we are not sure of anything, we have no concrete proof of what came before and what will come after we are here lucid with our eyes open. It is to face the fact that life often follows a torrent of movements that we have no control and which are often painful and harsh ripples, it is to be aware that the human being probes the infinite and through its incredible development of the neo-cortex is able to confabulate wonders, develop a thousand and one theories and experience incredible experiences to try not to feel alone in the cosmos and not so lost. In other words, it is to see that we are restless beings and in a constant eagerness to understand the unreachable, the incomprehensible. But is existentialism just sad pessimism and the bitterness of a life without a defined direction? It will depend on you, or who you absorbed this knowledge from. While there is a distinctly cruel and realistic footprint in existentialism, there is a counter-drive to this idea. Which is exactly the same thing but seen from another angle: -We're here! We are here and we are free for everything! We are privileged to have been the victorious sperm in the uterine race, we are with our eyes open experiencing the concreteness of pulsating life, the pure air, the passing clouds, the flowing waters, we can delight in a gentle wind after physical exhaustion that leaves us dripping with sweat, we can feel the greatest completeness of life in a long and comfortable hug from the person we love, we can have the absurdly surreal and incredible experience of bearing a child, a little being, and teaching him to live in this strange world, we have the starry night, the bonfire that lights and warms, we have so many other humans around us creating feeling for the world, feeding us with their knowledge through art and culture, friendships, loves. Life, however random and absurd, is real and happening right now as you read this. And that's the main reason you're lucid and alive.

A religious beginning

Despite having died long before the term was coined, Søren Kierkegaard was instinctively the first existentialist in its most traditional sense, albeit very much tied to a religious view of reality that he maintained throughout his life. Religiosity is not an active part of existentialist philosophy but it is inevitably an ever-present theme as it is tied to the core of human reasoning and its purposeful beliefs on earth. Kierkegaard lived in constant anguish over his religious spiritual beliefs and researches, and although he had a fervent connection with "god" he proposed that each individual should be responsible for himself and that state or religion should never dictate the rules of his life. . The freedom to believe or not, to act or not, is completely private and non-negotiable. It wasn't just Kierkegaard who fitted into this "post-morten" philosophical line, in the same boat geniuses such as Nietzsche and Dostoievski can still fit. Both did not necessarily follow a fixed line of research in this regard, but had thoughts very connected to the values of life observed by existentialists. Nietzsche, in turn, has always been that chaotic, insane, explosive and powerful genius, who even today captivates thousands of people with his worldview, often acidic and violent. Dostoevsky in turn was heavy as a storm sky, deep as only he could be, and bitterly connected to the social, religious and philosophical in an empirical and authentic way. Each in their own way expressed ideas and contents that formed not only the core of traditional existentialism but also had great importance even in psychoanalysis and sociology.

It was only with Sartre that we finally entered existentialism itself, with its famous concept of "Existence precedes essence." Idea that came to argue and reinforce that we are beings created and built in the "here and now". Only man himself through his existence can create and determine his own values, this is easily observable if we look at the history of all primitive and distant peoples and how each one has its own micro-universe and is satisfied with it without interventions external. Satre had a much more disgusted view of life, a bitterness for not understanding this chaos that is inherent in man, and this was clear in his treatises. And in this wave of the most famous existentialists, I highlight Albert Camus, who brought new concepts to this philosophy. Even trying to reinforce an overlapping proposal, calling their ideas Absurdism instead of existentialism. Absurdism comes basically from the realization that the lack of meaning and logic in the world are a rule when we try to add up: Man + Planet/World. There is something disconnected between us humans and everything else, a kind of estrangement, lack of belonging (which is not a general rule, but which easily encompasses 90%) of human beings. Camus argued that the incessant search for meaning was a losing fight, as he showed in the allegory of Sisyphus. He also considered that all man-made atrocities and inconsistencies (so opposed to the natural harmony and balance of all the rest of earthly life) were proof of the absurd.

Camus even focused on suicide in very interesting reflections. Assuming then that man finds that the world is absurd, there is no logic or rules and we are in a circus on fire in the long run, then what is the point of staying alive if the person feels dissatisfied? For Camu, suicide is a flawed and unjust escape. Since life is absurd and living is absurd, the conscious and lucid man of his situation in relation to the world must use his most noble and daring tool: Life. Living and facing the absurd is exactly what the "nonsense" does not expect. As nature is not sweet to beings, and as there is a very fragile relationship of beauty and delicacy in fluffy rabbits and wild deer that at any moment can be destroyed by a carnivorous animal on the prowl, man must flirt with his life in this random experience, living it in the most complete and powerful way that you are able to achieve. Realizing that we shape our present moment and that there are no limits to what we are capable of within the human mold, then wasting life with induced death is like wasting the opportunity to experience all the benefits still to come after "clarity" of conscience in relation to absurdism.

Well, naturally the content of this philosophy goes far beyond what I've put here, but I hope it served as a mere tidbit for those interested in the topic and I appreciate it if you have anything to add. I reinforce that the initiative to create the POBlosophy is exactly to leave it open so that everyone can use this tag to talk about some philosopher or philosophical topic. I take this opportunity to leave the index of articles already written so far:

Thomas, my background is in philosophy—Nietzsche & Kierkegaard are formative influences.

Here’s a fuller introduction you may enjoy to the books that shaped & transformed my life.

As I approached my forties, I turned to mysticism. If you like, I’m happy to gift you an e-copy of a book of mine:
