PROJECT ON HALF WAVE RECTIFIER AND EFFECTS OF CAPACITORS

Hi Guys, In the previous practical I shared on this Great platform I shared my experience on Full wave Rectification and bridge rectifier I did in class last week, Today I will be Discussing about Half wave rectifier.

COMPONENTS USED INCLUDES
TPS 3321 (Electricity & Semi conductors Training system)
Voltmeter
Oscilloscope (Gwitech digital storage oscillator)
Tps is a training system that is used in public universities, primarily for engineering students. It functions as a simulation board and contains various embedded components such as resistors, diodes, capacitors, step up transformers, step down transformers, transistors, inductors, and variable voltage.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES
A circuit diagram layout was constructed as shown in the patching diagram, 12v Dc was Produced from the Tps connected to the anode of Diodes while the Ground was connected to the Resistor, negative probe of the voltmeter and the Oscilloscope common. The cathode of the Diode was connected to the positive probe of the voltmeter and the Oscilloscope.
I switched on the Oscilloscope and the sinusoidal supplied. With the Oscilloscope dc coupled I Adjusted the Y Amplifier sensitivity to obtain a steady trace of about 4cm vertical and 5ms/cm horizontal, A Halfwave waveform displayed on the Oscilloscope.

EFFECT OF A RESERVOIR CAPACITOR
Very often when rectifying an Alternating voltage, we wish to produce a steady direct voltage free from variations of the sort observed in our first waveform. One way of doing this is to connect a capacitor I parallel with the load Resistor, the capacitor becomes charged up by the current through the Diode during the positive half cycle, then when the supply voltage starts to reduce again, the capacitors keeps the output voltage high and the Diode cuts off. Capacitor then discharges through R until the next positive half cycle occurs.

CAPACITOR ADDED AT 2.2UF
I noticed a rippled effect which is far different from the first waveform as it is getting closer to a smooth wave form. the larger the value of the Resistor the smoother the wave form

CAPACITOR ADDED AT 47UF
When the pulse ceases, the excess charge in the capacitor gets pushed out to the output. The result is a more smooth voltage.
