Transplanting and Propagating Seedlings in the Garden
We all need a little green in our life. In this post I will go over my little nursery system and how I plant, and propagate seedlings currently.
We usually start seeds one of two ways. We have some blocked off areas around the sides of our main raised beds that we have put some soil in. These areas get the water that runs through the main beds and out the bottom when the irrigation is on. So it gets an eb and flow about once a day. It is nutrient rich run off so it is great for the new seedlings. We have not had luck with all of our seeds in there though and we think part of the problem is ants running off with them. So we have a secondary system away from the ants.
In the house we start seeds in some cocopeet in the window. We don't have much light though so we have to transplant them to the garden at least once a week before they stretch too much. Or we put them in bigger cloth bags that still get the run off water from the main beds at the garden.
One of the seed beds is above. We also use this for propagation. When we have more mature plants we can take some cuttings and stick the stem in the soil and it will root and then we can transplant it as if it is its own plant again.
The seedlings are ready to transplant when they have at least their secondary leaves. Here is a whole handful of tomatoes ready to put in their permanent home.
We then dig holes and pop them in the ground and make sure they are well watered. We pull the mulch up and around them when they are well established.
