En muchos casos las personas confunden una estación de trabajo con un servidor, pero existen diferencias entre ambos tipos de equipos.
Existen diferencias entre una estación de trabajo y un servidos, en cuanto a su estructura el servidor si bien puede ser un equipo físico, también puede ser simplemente un equipo virtual, mientras que la estación de trabajo generalmente es un equipo físico y posee diferentes características y dimensiones.
En cuanto a la funcionalidad de ambos equipos se diferencian en lo siguiente: El servidos tiene como función específica la distribución y almacenamiento de la información por parte de usuarios específicos con la autorización específica, estos están conformados por grandes bases de datos configurados generalmente como cliente-servidos, con sistemas operativos acordes.
En cambio las estaciones de trabajo funcionan como ordenadores para un altos desempeño en tareas específicas como por ejemplo: Arquitectura, contaduría, diseño, etc.
Lo importante aquí es saber que existen diferencias entre ambos tipos de equipos, tanto en estaciones de trabajo como de servidor.
