Today the mission Artemis 1 returns

Souce

NASA prepared for the arrival of the Orion spacecraft from its lunar mission, the Artemis 1 mission. As we see in the images, the recovery landing team is practicing the rescue of the spacecraft at sea with a version of the Orion spacecraft, the ditching is scheduled for this December 11 will be in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The Orion spacecraft left Earth on November 16 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, powered by the new SLS moon mega rocket. During the mission, engineers and scientists tested the spacecraft's instruments, experimented with cubesats or mini-satellites, and performed various maneuvers and calibrations to improve the handling of the spacecraft thinking about future missions that will carry astronauts on board.

After these tasks, Orion began its journey back to Earth, leaving lunar orbit that took it up to 434,522 kilometers from our planet, a distance that exceeds the previous record set by Apollo 13 in 1970.

On Monday, December 5, the ship made a return motorized flyby, also taking advantage of the moon's gravity and accelerating to head back to Earth. That day the ship passed only 127 kilometers from the lunar surface, the mission according to NASA It is proving to be a success and the images represent a momentous achievement for the Artemis 1 mission.

The mission is a success, yes, but it was not perfect, it suffered some problems to start the launch, it had to be postponed several times due to failures, especially in the fueling system and during the trip some cubSats did not work as expected, in addition produced a strange cut in communications between Earth and the ship that lasted about 47 minutes.

Although the objective of this mission was precisely to test everything and in this way reveal the failures to be able to correct them and that they do not occur when a mission with a human crew is carried out, that would be the artemis 2 mission where NASA plans to send four astronauts to lunar orbit they will be the first humans to travel beyond low earth orbit since the last lunar mission Apollo 17 in 1972, if all goes well the artemis 2 mission departed from our planet in may 2024.
