Solar storms, the next threat.

We are moving towards the solar maximum that will be in July 2025, the solar cycles last about 11 years and the solar maximum, as its name indicates, means a period of maximum activity of the sun and therefore of greater number and frequency of geomagnetic storms.

These are a problem for the space satellites, the health of the astronauts, the space stations. Radio communications, navigation systems, intercontinental flights that cross polar areas and it is true that a strong solar storm can affect the electrical networks but from countries with high latitudes this means Canada, North of the USA. , Iceland northern European countries or Russia.

Solar or geomagnetic storms do not suppose blackouts in mid-latitude countries at least that is what happens with normal geomagnetic storms, which are measured on a scale from G1 to G5.

Another different matter are the events that break the scale such as the one of 1859 also known as the carrington event or other historical storms such as the Charlemagne event, they are events that are being discovered and studied in these years, because they were so powerful that they left a mark in the growth rings of trees.

This, for example, is what has allowed the presence of Vikings in Newfoundland to be dated with this attitude very recently due to the sign that the solar storm of 992 left on the trees that the Vikings later used to build tools and pieces of wood, each how much an event of these characteristics occurs, it is not known, it is suspected that it could be once every century or every two centuries, but there is still no statistic about it.

How disastrous an event of this type can be for our technology, it is not clear either, in Charlemagne's time there was obviously nothing that worked with electricity and at the time of the Carrington event the electrical networks were in a very primitive state, that is why there are various Studies and very varied opinions, from those who speak of a global blackout to those who say that local blackouts would only occur in regions far north or far south of the planet.

What will not be is an apocalypse and certainly not an inevitable apocalypse as some people paint, to avoid the effects of a geomagnetic storm event, measures can be taken such as reinforcing the networks, duplicating the systems and improving the emergency systems, of course the Countries with outdated electricity grids that have not invested in their maintenance will have the biggest problems.
