Simulations for Mars

Simulations for Mars

Souce

The great spatial challenge of the first half of this century is the conquest of Mars, although now we do not have the ships to make the trip, but in the meantime we can prepare some things, for example, through training or simulating the experience of a mission to the red planet.

This month two simulations are news, on the one hand we have the one organized by NASA that began on October 1 with four people who will live and work for 45 days in a unique habitat at NASA's Johnson space center in Houston, designed to serve with a replica of what would be a real Martian exploration scenario.

The small habitat is called a research analog for human exploration or HERA for its acronym in English, HERA to house the members of a crew that will simulate the long journey to the moon Phobos from Mars, this is not the only mission that has been done of this HERA program, like others, once the doors of the habitat are closed, physical contact with the outside will be closed, it will develop as if the participants really were millions of kilometers from the earth.

This includes things like increasing delays in their communications with the outside world, when the simulation takes them to Phobos that delay will be up to 5 minutes in each direction, it seems something simply curious but it is very important to know how to develop a language to be able to communicate efficiently taking into account the delay of several minutes, imagine that you are in an emergency situation and a communication or a vital instruction is not clear, you cannot send a message of - I did not understand! - can you repeat that! - because when the answer comes it may already be late.

It is a situation that can be vital and that perhaps they will test in this simulation because in it there will also be problems and emergency situations, the habitat is designed to be a kind of space squid game, the question is that this nasa habitat simulate the challenges of a mission on Mars and challenge the crew that will include resource limitations, equipment failures and other environmental stressors, plus the crew will have to perform tasks that will include simulated spacewalks, scientific research, use of the virtual reality and robotic controls this simulated mission will end on November 15 and it will not be the last there will be three more missions with an end scheduled for September 12, 2022.

The other Martian simulation is being carried out in the Ramon crater of the Israeli Negev desert, there an international team made up of a woman and five men from Germany, Austria, Israel, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands will live in isolation for three weeks until October 31 conducting science experiments for future manned missions to the red planet.

This is the thirteenth Mars analog mission of the Austrian space forum, undertaken in conjunction with the Israel space agency, during the mission that receives the name AMADEE-20 more than 25 experiments were carried out, two of them in cooperation with the European space agency; Both missions, that of NASA and this one that is being held in Israel, aim to be as well prepared as possible for when the time comes for a real trip to the red planet.
